Our defense is ranked 113th out of 123 FCS defenses and we are ranked 96th on third down defense. not real good, is it?

Mercer, Chattanooga and ETSU will eat our lunch if we are ranked 113th and 96th in the FCS......Hell Samford might give us a run for our money....I must admit I didn't know it was that bad thou.....Coach Bell better get there attention fast if they hope to be competitive........

Those rankings are for yards per game. It is not points per game. I think the yards we give up are important but points per game are the only thing that matters on the scoreboard. No argument that the amount of yards we give up is important but that does not count when it comes to the scoreboard. Agree we need to improve, but I don’t care if we give up 500 yards against Furman as long as we score more points than they have. Wofford is ranked 29th in total defense. Elon is ranked 50th in total defense and The Citadel is ranked 62nd and Furman is ranked 93rd in total defense based on yards per game. We beat Elon and Citadel and Wofford and we should beat Furman although we can’t take that for granted. Mercer is number 2 in total defense and are in the top 5 in just about every defensive category. In the 2 SoCon games we have won, we have given up 17 and 16 points and we gave up 17 against Elon and 24 against Campbell. NC State and Montana are the 2 outliers in the points we have given up. Just saying that against the SoCon teams so far and teams who are much like SoCon teams our defense has not looked bad. We need to fix giving up the big plays but we are heading in the right direction defensively.

Giving up yards per game against mediocre to bad offenses like Wofford and Citadel will matter when we play good or at least efficient offenses like UTC, ETSU, and Mercer. Those teams will turn those yards into points like Montana did.
Against FCS scholarship-level teams, we rank dead last by a pretty wide margin compared to the other SOCON teams in yards per game. Those have only led to us giving up 24 points per game in those 5 games (which would be 6th in the SOCON using the same FCS scholarship game parameter for all schools), but we have some good offenses to go.
The other problem is the last several years we would score 30+ and it wouldn’t matter as much. But this year we have turned the ball over several times putting our D in a bad spot and we have only scored more than 30 the one game we also gave up more than 50. Against FCS competition we have scored 16, 24, 35, 21, and 30.
We need to score early and often - preferably with TDs on Saturday, as I expect the Paladins are eager to test our D to see if they can turn 400+ yards into points.

The good teams coming up will make us pay for allowing so much yardage.
