Leatherwood Residence Hall was dedicated on April 8, 1967 along with Dodson Cafeteria and Helder Residence Hall. It was named in tribute to Mr. Thurman Leatherwood

That had to be early 60s as the centerfield fence for our baseball field was still there. We lost that field in 1966 when construction started for the University Center. Great photos.

Western Carolina looks like a totally different place now thanks to some good decisions made by prior administrations. Taking the road out of the middle of campus and tearing down Leatherwood, and the other cross shaped dorms and the two high rise dorms has really made the campus more pedestrian friendly and more attractive. I have heard rumors that Albright Benton is next to be replaced and that Reynolds’s will be torn down also. I don’t know if those are just rumors or if it is true. Also, I saw where $96 million or so was approved for an engineering building. Where will that new building go? Will they tear down or remodel Belk or will they convert the library to an engineering building to put it near the stem building or will they decide to build a stand alone building somewhere else on campus. With the eventual upgrade of our athletic facilities and the new engineering building, the look of the campus is going to continue to evolve and become more modern and aesthetically pleasing as time goes on.

My somewhat educated guess is that the new engineering building with be on the parking lot site behind the Cullowhee Baptist Church which is not being used now. It was a construction prep site for the new steam plant. Also, the library might be downsized as there is a proposed digital library to be located on the parking site between Forsyth, Coulter and the UC. Not sure about the futures of Albright and Benton, Reynolds, Buchanan and Robertson. Moore Hall is going to undergo a $40 million renovations for classrooms and the criminal justice department. Madison is still an attractive and functional building. The old Student Union building is still being used by student organizations. It's amazing how much the campus has changed since I was a freshman in 1961 with 1,282 fellow Catamounts. Anyone who has not been on campus in 30 years night get lost.

Dodson Cafeteria was built in 1966 and was demolished in 2009 to make way for a new dining hall.
