Leatherwood Residence Hall was dedicated on April 8, 1967 along with Dodson Cafeteria and Helder Residence Hall. It was named in tribute to Mr. Thurman Leatherwood My home away from home. Good old Leatherwood!!

Memorial Stadium is in the center foreground of this 1960s aerial photograph. Also visible (top center) are Albright and Benton Residence Halls for women (built 1962) on the former site of Boodleville. Bird Building (built 1960) is to the right of Breese Gym, under the three pine trees where "Uncle" Dave Rogers's home once stood. The campus shopping district including the Cullowhee Post Office and the Townhouse Restaurant are visible across the road from the far end of McKee Laboratory School.

Did you ever sit on "the wall" to watch the ladies go by?

The Invasion of the Underclad Undergrads
For a brief time in the 1970s, college students threw off their inhibitions — among other things — and ran free. One cold winter’s night 40 years ago, when Dwight Sparks was a Western Carolina University junior — an otherwise clean-cut, reasonably serious undergrad from Davie County preparing for a career in journalism — he did something crazy. He streaked. That is, under the pseudo-cover of darkness, he sprinted across the chilly Cullowhee campus, almost as naked as the day he was born, while a small gathering of startled onlookers gawked, laughed, or cheered for him and his two fellow streakers. read more here

Those are some fun memories. I saw my first football game at WCU at Memorial Stadium and stayed in Leatherwood my freshman and sophomore years while eating mostly in Dodson. I was a RA in Leatherwood the night of that great record setting "streak" in '74. We had to go station ourselves at the doors to Helder and Scott, etc. to make sure none of the streakers got the urge to run into the girl's dorms. Those were some great times!

Great pics, thanks for sharing them, I left (graduated) in 72, so they bring back lots of memories of Memorial Stadium. If anyone has old pics from back in the day, please feel free to share in this space.

My first favorite Catamount was Eagle Moss, out of Brevard, who I believe weighed in at about 145
