Dodson & Leatherwood This photograph shows Dotson Cafeteria on the left, and Leatherwood Dormitory behind it, under construction. To the right is the completed Helder Dormitory. All three buildings were opened in 1966. The baseball field in the foreground, on what is now the University Center lawn.

Stillwell and Hunter Library The upright stone in the center foreground was a monument commemorating Robert Lee Madison; it stood by the ornamental pool for many years. Is the pool of water still around? I think I saw the stone when I attended.

McKee (underconstruction) The McKee Laboratory School (seen here under construction, and sometimes referred to as McKee Training School) was named for Gertrude Dills McKee, first woman to be elected to the NC senate and a two-term member of the college board of trustees. When completed, McKee housed the Cullowhee grade school and served as the practice teaching facility for Western's education majors. The house visible in the pines behind the left end of McKee belonged to David Rogers, a prominent Cullowhee farmer who sold his farm to the school in 1924; the house burned down shortly after this photograph was taken. Breese Gymnasium is to the left, and Moore Dorm looms on the hill above Breese.

Graham Graham Infirmary was built in 1939 as part of the six-building construction project funded by the New Deal's Works Progress Administration. Previously, the college infirmary was located in Moore Dormitory.

the late great Gus Henry told me a MEMORABLE story once about beanies, liquor, and a roadtrip to watch WCU play Carson-Newman in 1966. I nearly ran off the road from laughing so hard. LOL!!!
God, tell Gus to send down some good CAT KARMA in 2012! Still miss ya Trucker!

Wow! Awesome photos--bring back lots of memories. Was at WCU from fall 79 to spring 83. Actually went to game with my dad back in the sixties at old stadium. Ate many a burger at the townhouse. Sausage bisquits were pretty good when hungover. Watched Joyner burn as lots of people stood around crying, and actually mowed Mrs. Beams grass up on the roost for two summers. Really weird to look at the photos and know that buildings have gone up and come down (Dodson, Helder, Leatherwood) since then.

1940 Flood in Cullowhee, NC The Old Cullowhee Road Bridge over theTuckasegee River. At the point when this picture was taken the water had subsided and was on the decline, however, the damage done is clearly evident. A few years before I arrived in Cullowhee... In fact, a few years before I arrived anywhere...
