A 1940s winter scene of the campus from Buzzards Roost across the football field. Buildings from left to right include the new Cullowhee Baptist Church (the smokestack is attached to the steam plant across the road from the church, and New Madison is above them both), Davies on the snowy hilltop, Moore in the center, and Breese; Graham can barely be seen above the right end of Breese

In 1929 the school changed its name to Western Carolina Teachers College, reflecting its decision to become a four-year baccalaureate institution granting the bachelor of science degree in education. In addition to no longer enrolling high school students, for the first time the name "Cullowhee" was missing from the institution’s name.

Those are some great photos and really bring back some good memories. I was at WCU 73-77 and saw some good games in the old stadium before they built the new one, spent a lot of time at the Townhouse, & the wall hanging out with friends and all that stuff. Tubing down the Tuckasegee was always fun as well. Man....good times for sure! The place sure has changed a lot over the years.

1940 Flood in Cullowhee, NC The Old Cullowhee Road Bridge over theTuckasegee River. At the point when this picture was taken the water had subsided and was on the decline, however, the damage done is clearly evident. We had a couple of floods in '73 or '74. One flooded the basement of the house I was staying in just to the left of the bridge in this picture, but it took out about 10 smaller bridges in our part of Jackson County including Speedwell and Cullowhee Mountain Rd.

Good old Brown. When I lived on the hill and in Harrill, I would roll in about 8:28am for pancakes on the weekend. They were only open from 7:30 to 8:30 on weekends

Good old Brown. They were only open from 7:30 to 8:30 on weekends Even When I was in Albright-Benson I couldn't make it up a 7:30. LOL Back when they used meal cards, did anyone else ever make up for that missed breakfast with a meal a Brown, then rush down the hill for a quick bite at Dobson?
