I'm a student at western, it would be better to keep the money in the Whee. then help sylva grow, any way the whee can get more business because of the student(10,000) have a higher population then sylva(2,588). business look at that, when they make a decision . why do you think sylya does not have an outback steakhouse or a chili's and people don't come to see sylva, they come to see western.
If you are going to ask why they haven't come already, it because it is easy to make a decision not to come to the Whee when you can't sell alcohol. because it cuts out around 50% of a restaurants profit. what business would come to the Whee in this economy and only make half of their profit and hope to stay open.

I agree 100% with alcohol sales in Cullowhee. You cannot begin to imagine the untapped potential that alcohol sales would mean to the area, college life, nightlife, and the gameday experience. I envision a small Charlottesville Va. And for goodness sakes try to lure some hotels to the area.

Billhill, Liquor by the drink is not available in all of Jackson county. The only place anyone can get a liquor drink is in Cashiers (as a result of the "golf club exemption"). For goodness sake, their is only one liquor store is in the whole county. By the way, I was in Cullowhee for the UNC-A game, as well as three football games. I am also in the Cullowhee area at least once a month on business.
Westerncarolinafan is spot on. Seriously, WCU is the life blood of Jackson county. If it was not for Western and the golf clubs in Cashiers, Jackson county would have dried up years ago. Where on earth would tax revenue come from if it weren't for (private residential) housing used by students or the real estate taxes coming from the southern end of Jackson county. C'mon Man!
Billhill, community is very important to any college. A stronger partnership between WCU and the rest of Jackson county would help things out. In all seriousness, though, the students, the alumni, as well as John Bardo, are the reasons for the academic success in Cullowhee. Students and alumni will be key to success of our athletic programs. Dr. Belcher said during his visit to Hickory (his statewide introduction tour), the athletic program is the front doorstep to a thriving and prosperous college.
Be that as it may, there must be a reason to get decent football recruits to sign with Western. There must be ways to generate excitement for our football team. Good facilities and student spirit will go a long way to making our program relevant. ...and yes billhill, kids like to party and drink. The fact that a student has to get in the car and drive 7 miles to Sylva is utterly ridiculous.

Like it or not (which is usually based on religious convictions), the ability to sell alcohol will bring restaurants and other amenities that just will not come into the area with that ability to sell alcohol. The university was established in 1889, and we can see how much the community outside the borders of WCU has grown up to this point (it hasn't). This is the stimulus needed to get the college town around WCU that is needed.

thanks Hickory pat and wcu72 I bet many people not know this, but Jackson county is in the top 10 county with the most drunk driving crashes. because of only having one place to buy alcohol. I believe it would to a good idea for a Administrator to put a poll on this

^^^^^ for all of you above. You totally misconstrued my post. Hickory---if you choose to address me personally, please do so by spelling my name right. Sort of like me calling you Hickory Fat. I am all for liquer by the drink, voted for it in the little poll. The point you so obviously didn't get, because you don't live here, is that there is more to it than meets the eye. The political powers that be in this county, ie elected commish's etc... are also business owners and do not want to see the competition, plain and simple. They love, love, love their authority and monopolies. It has been that way here no matter what party is in charge. Cullowhee will not incorporate, that is another problem. The university itself owns leases on all businesses on the "strip" in Cullowhee, and regulate anything and everything that goes on there. Getting the picture yet?
As for where you can by a mixed drink--- Hickory you are again wrong. I can leave where I'm sitting and in ten minutes or less have what ever mixed drink I want in SYLVA! I've lived and been in business here since graduating from WCU in 1983. I think I know where the heck I can buy a drink.
As for the WCU student who seems to have all the answers, where are all these multitude of chain establishments going to go? Are you privy to some great gobs of available and this is key, usable land to build all this? What are you proposing to tear down? Unless WCU themselves plan to give some surrounding land, it will probably not happen. I agree, Outback or Chili's will want liquer by the drink before they come, but at this point, there are far greater challenges for them to overcome.
