While the ASU folks like to say Western is no longer their rival, I think some of the proof is in the pudding (i.e. attendance figures).
On a cold, snowy, bad weather day in Boone, the Mountaineers draw a season high of 2,852 fans to Holmes. Who was their opponent you might ask. Well it was none other than Western Carolina.
You then might ask, how did they draw against their real "rival", Georgia Southern?
ASU played GSU in Boone on Jan. 24th, and drew 1,292 fans. Well, what about Davidson, the best team in the league, I bet they drew more against Davidson than against WCU. Well, you'd be wrong if that is your guess.
ASU played Davidson in Boone on January 26th, and didn't even draw 2,000 that night, the official attendance was 1,968.
So don't let them kid you, playing WCU brings out their fans like no one else they play. Rival or not.
