Babe Howell, who coached Sylva-Webster High School to seven state championships in two sports during a 25-year career here, died tonight at Mission Hospitals, St Joseph's Campus, in Asheville at age 84. A native of Monroe and graduate of Western Carolina, Howell began his coaching career at Sylva High as an assistant under Coach Joe Hunt. After a stint as head coach at two Georgia high schools, he returned to Jackson County in 1965. At the time of his retirement, he was listed as the winningest football coach (301-121-6) and baseball coach (628-220) in North Carolina history. The football mark has since been surpassed. www.thesylvaherald.com/top_stories/article_dd249ae6-b51f-11e2-bc52-001a4bcf6878.html
