A nice local article on Matt Smith. FREDERICKTOWN — He didn’t leave much room for improvement, but Matt Smith somehow found a way to raise the bar. Over and over again. Fredericktown’s four-time All-Ohio center fielder has punished the baseball ever since digging into the left-handed batter’s box for the first time as a not-so-wide-eyed freshman. His four-year assault of overmatched northcentral Ohio pitchers resulted in a career batting average of .555, ranking him in the top five in state history. The Western Carolina-bound Smith graduated earlier this month with 167 career runs batted in, fourth in Ohio High School Athletic Association history. He also ranks in the top 20 in career hits (161) and career stolen bases (105). “He just obliterated every record in our record book,” said Fredericktown coach Tom Craze, who was an assistant coach during Smith’s freshman season before taking over in 2011. “He may be the most decorated athlete in the history of our school. What he accomplished this spring was incredible.” www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/article/20130611/HSSPORTS05/306110025/Fredericktown-star-repeat-winner?nclick_check=1
