On the other hand, there are coaches who fall under what I call the Three Year Rule. A few years ago, when discussing which coaches I thought should not have been retained, I concluded that the vast majority of coaches demonstrate within their first three years on a job whether they will be successful there.
It rarely (and then usually due to circumstances such as probation) takes four, much less five, years to discern whether a coach will be successful at a school.
Obviously, that is a broad assertion. It must feature the understanding that the definition of success for Duke football is far different from the definition of success for Clemson football.
