Western Carolina learned late Tuesday evening that transfer right-handed pitcher T.J. Fussell had been granted a sixth-year of eligibility from the NCAA and was eligible to join the Catamount baseball roster. Fussell transferred to WCU this fall for graduate school with hopes of gaining the extra final year of playing status to pitch for the defending Southern Conference regular season champions.
An Asheville, N.C., product, the 6-4 hurler, Fussell, played high school baseball at Reynolds High, graduating in 2008. He attended NAIA and Appalachian Athletic Conference-member, Montreat College. As a senior, Fussell made 10 appearances including eight starts with one complete game, tossing 43.1 innings with 46 strikeouts against 12 walks with a 4.57 ERA and a 1-4 record. He limited opponents to a .219 batting average against last year with just 10 of the 35 hits allowed going for extra bases.
During this past summer, Fussell was a Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL) All-Star after leading the league in strikeouts (55 in 33.0 innings) with a 3-1 record and 1.09 earned run average for the Morganton Aggies. Fussell, who had Tommy John surgery in 2012, then went to the Coastal Plain League with the Wilson Tobs where he was 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.
