Tom Smith is a great baseball coach. His results at UNC-A have only been mediocre, for whatever reason. I'll bet if he had been at or near the top of the Big South for the past couple of years, he'd not be "retiring".

I think he was the HC for about 5 years, and I'd have thought by now he'd have the bulldogs at or near the top of the Big South. I wonder what is the problem at UNCA? I know their budget is small, and Tom probably didn't have many scholarships to work with, but still I thought his win/loss record would have been better.

IMHO they had trouble with recruiting, not because of Coach Smith but because of the school it's self. They have poor practice facilities, play on a high school field, it's a liberal arts school with limited majors and they are recruiting from the same player pool as WCU, App., UNC-G, WFU etc. The better players are going to those schools because of the reasons listed above. They probably got a few players just because of Coach Smith. He recruited my son and he really liked Coach Smith but he could not compete with all (even limited as it is)that WCU offered.
