UNC-W has announced changes to the Hughes Bros. Challenge schedule for this weekend. The original schedule was for 2 games on Friday, 2 games on Saturday and 2 games on Sunday. Friday will be bitter cold with a high forecast of 31, even though it is supposed to be SUNNY. Some rain is forecast to move in late Sunday afternoon/evening. So... UNC-W has chosen to schedule only one game on Friday and one game on Sunday and play 4 games on Saturday (high forecast for 55). Western and George Mason are the only teams being punished by playing on Friday. Seems to me they could still have played 2 games on Sunday, even if they had to start a little earlier to be finished before the arrival of the late rain. (But no one asked me...) www.uncwsports.com/news/2015/2/18/BB_0218150902.aspx?path=baseballFriday 1:30 p.m. Western Carolina vs. George Mason (at UNCW field) Saturday 11 a.m. Western Carolina vs. UNC-W (at UNCW field) 7 p.m. Wake Forest vs. Western Carolina (at UNCW field)

My assessment of the weekend in Wilmington.
Game 1 Saturday - Bryan Sammons had a pretty good start. Not his best, but very acceptable. He is the ace of our staff. Lack of defense support was a killer. UNC-W scored 6 runs and 3 of them were unearned. We did not get timely hits that we needed. Left runner on 3B in 4 different innings.
At the game on Sunday I heard that J D Long is playing hurt. Arm issues. Not an excuse... but a possible reason for some of the defensive struggles.
Game 2 Saturday - Wake Forest pitching was awesome. If they get pitching like that all year, they will compete in the ACC. Not just one guy. They threw 3 different folks with same results. Shut down our bats. However, Colton Davis matched the WF starter pitch-for-pitch through the first 4 innings. After 4 complete we had one hit and WF had no hits. They broke out in the 5th inning for 3 runs on 3 hits and we never matched that.
Game 3 Sunday - Beautiful baseball weather. Sunshine peeked out from behind clouds several times. Temp hit low 70’s. We played loose and took out some frustration on George Mason. (GMU is not a bad ball team despite going 0-3 this weekend. Remember we went 0-3 in Athens last year vs. N. Florida, Buffalo and UGa and we were a good team last year.)
We took more than an hour BP on an open field beside the stadium before the game. We desperately needed that. Our lack of practice during the week showed itself in many different ways this weekend.
Jacob Hoyle was out of the lineup due to a hand injury and may miss a week or so. He appeared to be struggling at the plate in Games 1 & 2 and the hand injury would certainly explain that. Can’t grip the bat right. (When he grips it right, you see resin oozing out of the end of the handle.)
Great offensive production from a number of Cats today. Bradley Strong put on a show for the scouts who were present. 3-4 with 4 RBI’s. Stole 6 bases, including stealing 2nd and 3rd on two consecutive times on base. FR Caleb Robinson (filling in for Hoyle at 1B) was 3-5 with 2 RBI’s. FR Brett Pope continued his fine offensive production with 2 hits and 2 SB’s (he also stole 2nd and 3rd in the same time on base).
Freshman Brendan Nail gave up a leadoff bunt single + a HR to the first 2 batters of the game. Then settled down and pitched into the 5th inning giving up nothing else.
Long Range Forecast We have a good mix of solid veterans + some very talented newcomers + some other folks who have developed significantly since last year. If we get solid pitching, we will be a very, very good team by the end of the season. It is coming together. ...
Hope we get a break from the weather this week. Go Cats!
