Very disappointing year. Especially disappointing to me was the fact THAT THE TEAM DID NOT IMPROVE AS THEY WENT THROUGH THE YEAR. Injuries were plentiful and significant, but to try to use that to explain a very poor season would be an excuse (vs. a reason).
There were some bright spots that bode well for the future. Brett Pope had a fine Freshman year. Matt Smith contributed significantly although he was unable to play in the OF nearly all year. Kramer Ferrell was a fine addition to an OF that had been depleted by graduation. Pierce Suttles got better and better with the stick as he got more AB's.
In my opinion, our pitching staff did not improve one bit during the season. Worst pitching (overall) that I have ever seen in Cullowhee. And no improvement during the year. First game in the post-season tournament we walked 11 and hit 3 batters. 14 free passes! At the end of the season Where's the development and improvement?
Our staff averaged nearly 7 walks per game for the entire season. Ranked #294 out of 295 schools that play D-1 baseball. 316 BB's for the season. Our opponents only allowed our batters 185 BB's. 70% more walks than our opponents pitchers issued to us! How can you expect to win a ball game when you put people on base free like that? And nearly twice as many WP's as our opponents. "Put 'em on; move 'em over; don't even make 'em swing the bat... "
Too much experimentation, in my opinion. Trying to make major modification to pitching motions and arm slots causes injuries. And we had several significant injuries with our pitchers during the year. Sore arms, back injuries, etc.
We averaged scoring over 7 runs per game. But that was not enough due to our pitching deficiencies. I generally subscribe to the old saying, "If the student hasn't learned, the teacher hasn't taught."
What's the outlook for next year? I have no idea, but something has got to change before another baseball season! The quality of coaching? The approach to coaching? A better job of scouting and recruitment? I don't know. I don't claim to be a coach. Just a huge Catamount fan who knows we need to do better...
