Went to Houston last week to attend the graduation of a granchild. After all that was finished, the wife and I went down to Corpus Christi on Sunday and saw the Hooks defeat the Arkansas Travelers (Angels farm team) 3-1. I had gotten Tyler's phone number from his folks before going and communicated with him by text before going.
He played 3B the entire game and made a couple of really fine defensive plays. 0-3 at the plate, but got a BB and scored the 2nd run for CC.
We took Tyler out for a bite to eat after the game and visited a while. He's in a bit of a slump after starting off really hot (.350 BA). BA down in the 290's, which is not bad. Tyler is optimistic but also realistic. He said the Astros leadership likes him, but the path to the Big League at 3B or as DH is somewhat blocked at this time.
When the Astros picked up Evan Gattis from the Braves in a trade during the winter, they sewed up their DH needs for several years.
On the Hooks roster is 3B Colin Moran who was an All-American at UNC-Chapel Hill and drafted in the First Round of 2013. (Tyler was drafted in the 33rd round same year.) So who have the Astros got more invested in? Moran was injured early in the season and Tyler was playing 3B every day. Moran is healthy now and they are playing him at 3B 75% of the time. That means that Tyler is DH or on the bench. His BA slippage has tracked his less frequent playing time.
But he's hoping to hit a hot streak. He is kinda hoping for a trade that will give him better openings to the Bigs. He is hoping to be picked for the Arizona Fall League. That's a chance to show what you can do against the highest level of competition you've ever played against (every team's top minor leaguers).
Tyler is a fine young man and a great representative of WCU.
BTW, they had an off-day on Monday and started a 3 game series AT Midlands, TX on Tuesday night vs. the Midlands RockHounds (Oakland farm team). Tyler did not play last night until he was inserted as a PH to lead off the 9th inning with the Hooks leading 3-2. He hit a HR. CC scored another run in the inning and won the game 5-2.
Corpus Christi is running away with the Southern Division of the Texas League. 10.5 game lead over #2 in their division. 5.5 games better than the leader in the Northern Division.
