I have followed the Arizona Fall League pretty carefully for the past 5 years (spend a good portion of October out there) and believe I understand the rationale that the MLB teams use when they are choosing the 7 players from their organization to send to the AFL. I would almost bet my next pension check that Tyler White will be playing in the AFL this year. The players from the Astros organization will be playing for the Glendale Desert Dogs along with the players selected by the Dodgers, Pirates, Phillies and White Sox organizations.
There is an outside chance that Matt Benedict (Pirates) might be at Glendale this Fall. Matt played in the AFL in 2013, but it is not uncommon for a player to play the AFL more than one year. Matt has struggled in the Pirates organization but is having his best year so far (his K/BB ratio is 3.5/1 this year vs. <2/1 in earlier years). And his ERA is down. He has been with Altoona in AA Eastern League most of this year. Matt may have turned the corner. Would be cool for Matt and Tyler to be teammates again.
There is a chance that Jeremy Null might be sent to the AFL by the Cubs. He is doing fine at High A Myrtle Beach since going there mid-season. Has had some quality starts where he did not get good run support and came out with no decision. Jeremy tore it up with Class A South Bend during the 1st half of the season. 6-2 record; 2.33 ERA; 12/1 K/BB ratio at South Bend. In the AFL this year, players from the Cubs organization will play for the Mesa Solar Sox along with players from Tampa Bay Rays, the Angels, Oakland and the Marlins.

Im pretty sure, for the most part, teams send a couple few of their top young prospects who need more work. Im sure after that they fill out rosters but White or Bennedict dont fit that the normal bill. White has been in system for few years and he is at AAA and Bennedict isnt a prospect and helps fill out a roster so cant in anyway see him going to AFL. Im not trying to put down anything about Bennedict but it is what it is.

"Needing some work" is one of the criteria. To evaluate against a higher level of competition is a major factor, as well as "showcasing" a prospect.
Every organization has scouts in attendance at every game and the information/data collected is used for possible future trades; sometimes during the Winter just weeks after the AFL season is completed.
For example, last Fall I saw Jace Peterson play in the AFL as a member of the SD Padres organization. Just a few weeks later, he was part of the Justin Upton trade with the Braves and has been the starting 2B all season for Atlanta. The Braves scouts obviously saw something last Fall that they liked about Jace Peterson.
This is only Tyler's 3rd year in the minors and his progress so far has been steady and on an upward trajectory. 2013 - 3 teams (Rookie 1, Rookie 2, Class A Minus) Success at all 3 stops. 2014 - 2 teams (A and High A) Success at both stops. 2015 - 2 teams (AA and AAA) Success at both stops.
I'll bet you a Hot Dog at the SoCon tournament that Tyler is playing in Arizona in Oct/Nov.
This is Matt Benedict's 5th year in the minors and, as I said, he has struggled. Be moved up a level; get sent back down; etc. I have no idea how the Pirates rate him in their system. But it is a fact that he is having the best performance this year that he's had since he started his pro career. He went to the Arizona Fall League in 2013 and his stats in the Summer of 2013 had been pretty weak. I did not understand why the Pirates sent him then.

I'm shocked Tyler's not on the roster. But it is what it is. Thanx for posting the rosters.
I'm going out to AZ for the 5th straight year. Love those games! And love spending the time at the games with my grandchildren while they are on Fall Break. Bought my plane tickets today.
Philip Ervin was super with Samford.
Spencer Kieboom (C from Clemson) was in the AFL last year and he's back again this year. We talked with him a lot before games last year. Very friendly and down to earth. From Marietta, GA.
Noticed that Tyler Webb (a former Gamecock pitcher) is one of the NYY selections from AAA.
