Went over to Florence, SC last night to see the Gastonia Grizzlies play the Florence RedWolves. Grizzlies have 2 Catamounts on the roster.
Rising Junior LHP Corey Sikes and Incoming JUCO RHP Jacob Breakfield (from Catawba Valley Comm. College; the same school from whence came Bryson Bowman).
Corey did not make the trip to Florence because he had pitched the previous night. Got to talk with Jacob before the game. He can't wait to get to Cullowhee! He is so excited!
Jacob is from Bessemer City and has quite a history. Said he had a serious back injury that cost him his SR year in High School. No looks from any college. So he worked in his Dad's business for a year and a friend mentioned to him that he should participate in a tryout. He did and CVCC invited him to come up. He pitched one year as a starter (2014 season) and apparently did some arm damage near the end of the season. Had to have Tommy John surgery and missed the next season (2015). In school but rehabbing. During the college season just completed, CVCC used him as a Closer. Jacob said he loved that! "Come in and sling it! Don't worry about how long you can last. Just let it all out!"
He said his arm is in great condition. Said his fastball was 86-87 before the surgery and now it is 91-92. He has 2 years left to use 2 remaining years of eligibility. He COULD be the replacement for Colton Davis.
He said that Coach Nate Cocolin saw him pitch and invited he and another CVCC pitcher up to Cullowhee. He said he met with Nate and Coach Moranda. They both were offered places on the roster. Unfortunately, the other guy (Taylor Purus, LHP) has just undergone Tommy John surgery and will not be able to participate this coming year. Apparently he is coming to school and will be medically redshirted and looking forward to participate in the 2017-2018 school year, assuming the rehab goes well.
Jacob was slated to be used in relief last night. However, the Grizzlies starter was in control the entire game (after surrendering a 1st inning HR) and pitched a complete game. I am going to try to see another Grizzlies game or two when they play near where I live.
We still need to bring in more pitching to help us next year + our returning hurlers MUST have developed during the off-season and stay healthy in order for us to compete in 2017.
