It took extras, but the Purple Squad took game 1 of the WCU Baseball Fall World Series, 5-1. The Gold Squad looks to get even, 5:30 pm on Wednesday

As a former Baseball Catamount, my hats off to Coach M for a great job last season. He got the job done even though he only had approximately 6 scholarships to give for the players. The Catamount Baseball Program is the only Successful D1 Program at WCU since 1977. Won more baseball games against the "Power 5 Conferences" than any other sport team at WCU.

Hi Hampton: I was only there for the 2nd day, but I can tell you what I saw . . . A whole lot of guys really squared it up -- even some of the freshman hit the ball REALLY hard. Bryson hit home runs in his first two at bats and the Gold intentionally walked him to avoid the trifecta. Nobu went deep for the Purple and JD had a few hard hit balls for the Gold. Several guys stood out on the bases. The pitching looked sharp at times and the defense, for the most part, was solid for both sides - despite the fact some of them were playing out of position. All in all, I think they looked very good and expect great things from them in 2017. Analysis: Defense will improve over last year. The freshman should contribute a great deal. Bats will be bigger than last year. Pitching is deeper and better. Some may recall that I said the Cats would win the SOCON in 2016 when many thought they were going in the tank  IF I HAD TO GUESS NOW, WE REPEAT IN THE SOCON! Let's hope I prognosticate well again!
