...Also, since Bardo left, Belcher has slowly lowered our academic standards each year. He probably figures nobody would notice. We had better get rid of Belcher before he destroys Western. And exactly how do you know this is the case? Do you have statistics to back up such a claim? One good indication is to look at the national rankings. WCU has dropped to #37 in the Southern Regional Universities categories of the US News rankings. ASU still comes in the top 10 at #9 (they've dropped some), and before Bardo left, WCU had moved up to #10. Bardo sucked for athletics, but he was great for academics. Elon is #1 some of the schools that are ahead of WCU now..... Here are some statistics around academic standards for incoming freshman over the last few years.
For the 2010-11 year (Bardo's last year as chancellor) Average SAT 1045 which was a new record high Average weighted GPA, 3.51
For 2015-16 year Average SAT 1058 (1178 for the Honor's College) Average weighted GPA, 3.81
Yep, right there we see how our academic standards have "slowly been lowered". Belcher is clearly turning WCU into an academic wasteland of an institution.

Since you apparently are doubting me, here's the latest info right from the WCU web site, www.wcu.edu/apply/undergraduate-admissions/admission-statistics.aspx As for the other stats, I took those straight from the Alumni Assoc board meeting official minutes from the Sept 25, 2010 meeting. However, I don't think those minutes are on the web. That said, here's the excerpt from the Chancellor's report during that meeting. "University Update: After Dr. Bardo’s update and question and answer session, Dr. Bardo introduced Jeffrey Throop, the President of the Tournament of Roses. Mr. Throop told the board members that they could be very proud of the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band. They were very exciting to watch and he is sure that they will steal the show at the Rose Parade. Thirteen bands get invited to the Rose Parade and there are two from N.C. (Western Carolina and N.C. Central). There will be 52 million people watching the parade in the U.S. and it will be broadcast in China this year. Admissions enrollment is 9,400 total enrollment numbers are flat with more on campus; fewer off campus freshman SAT score is a new record at 1045; 3.51 is the average GPA had 14,997 applications; 38% admits; 1,450 in the freshman class there will not be a lot of growth; but will concentrate on improving quality"

87 - The reason I've cut way back on visiting and posting here is what you are experiencing. 72 (and now FLCat) is really angry and so negative I've pretty much cut back to checking in once a week and posting less.

87 - The reason I've cut way back on visiting and posting here is what you are experiencing. 72 (and now FLCat) is really angry and so negative I've pretty much cut back to checking in once a week and posting less. 75, You are welcome to visit or post anytime you want to, or not - that is a personal decision. If you feel the board is too negative, you can help balance it out with positive posts, or you can just stay away - as you felt the need to advertise to the other readers. For your and others information, 72, and FLCat, as well as 87 is welcome to post here as long as they stay within the "terms of service" of this board, whether I agree or disagree with their posts. Up to this point, none have violated those rules. I wish all was well with Catamount athletics, but it's not, and trying to muzzle posters that I or you may disagree with, will not change that fact.

I agree with your philosophy Jerry, and am grateful for your service and the time you put into this. Obviously, I'm not gone. But I am frustrated with the hijacking of threads to complain about the administration of both the athletic department and the university. Do we need change? I would argue that we need leadership more in tune with big time athletics. A LOT of progress has been made over the past five years by people like Gorham Bradley and others - including Coach Speir.
I also think that if we have a 7 win season this year, a lot of the negativity will fade.
Keep up the good work sir. Bob

I would argue that we need leadership more in tune with big time athletics. You and I can agree on this point. FLCat, James and I are not "angry" as you stated in another post, just frustrated with 80 years of overall poor athletic programs. Be assured, I'm not pointing at the athletes we have recruited when I make that statement, the university does a disservice to all our student-athletes by not making the commitment to field (and fund) athletics at the level the college administration has decided our programs should belong to, currently Div I. Funding our program at the bottom of the Southern Conference, and providing inadequate facilities for a member of the SoCon is what frustrates us. Some of us just think the time to sit by, and say "just wait until next year" has long since passed. Things will NEVER change as long as Catamount fans settle for the "small time" athletics mindset. Why do we always get the university leadership that's willing to "settle" for poor athletic outcomes?
