Furman was one of the reasons why WCU did not win the regular season championship last year. Sammons has had two games in a row that he has not been as effective as he was earlier in this season. Loosing to the last place team is not good & will hamper WCU's ability to catch Mercer. This loss will come back to bite the Cats in the butt come tourney time.

For the last three games (Sunday's ETSU, PC and yesterday's game) we have been leaving way too many runners on base... We are hitting the ball well (maybe not enough extra bases) but not getting them in... Need to step up big time to win this series!

This has been a horrible year for Catamount athletics. Were it not for the men's & women's track & field teams it would be an overall sad state of affairs.
Who is the man in charge? Randy Eaton. Most CEOs would be fired for such a poor performance by their subordinates.

Most CEOs would be fired for such a poor performance by their subordinates. Randy does not think he is part of the problem or any part of the problem. Belcher does not think he part of the problem either, but they both are the majority of the problem because they refuse to fund the programs we have. Western has other priorities and Athletics is not in the top 10. That is the problem. It always has been. When Belcher says he is the Chancellor for all of Western, he is not telling the truth. When it comes to athletics, there is no one who cares about winning programs. No wonder Gorham left. He probably got fed up working his arse off and then not getting any support from the administration. Who could blame him.

This is so sad to hear as a parent of an athlete. How can the lack of concern for athletics by administration be fixed? Sad to think that a man whose job is athletics could care so little about the athletic programs. Is there anyone above Belcher to take concerns to? If i had known this information before my child committed there I would have steered another direction.

Catparent,
Western Carolina is a fine school, and academics at WCU has been on the rise for a long time.
Your son or daughter made a great selection in choosing to attend Western Carolina. I'm sure they visited, met the coaches and have a good feeling about their selection. The Catamount nation is a family, and family take care of each other.
Is it true that athletics are not funded at the top of the Southern Conference? Yes, and there will always be those that want the university to go into debt issuing bonds to fund athletic facility upgrades. Like most schools, there are facilities that need upgrading, but those things will take time and money to accomplish. Overall all, I feel the facilities and coaching staff stack up well against those of the Southern Conference, not always the best, but certainly not at the bottom either.
There is always those that will see the cup as half empty, and complain there is not enough funding, or the wrong people are in the wrong positions, that goes with college sports.
Wait until your child is at Western and then gage his experience both academically and athletically, I'm sure you'll then feel that Western Carolina was a wise selection.

I always hate losing Furman, they always seem to be our Achilles Heel no matter how bad they are and good we are. For whatever reason.
However, I want to WCU to win as many games as possible but the main thing is how we do at the end of the season. As long as we can get it together and make a run and win the SoCon championship like last year, I will be happy. Winning the SoCon tournament is the only way we get into a Regional.
In terms of the higher ups. Yes, I do believe a lot more could be done, but how much can AD Eaton and Chancellor Belcher really do? Belcher has to find a balance between Academics and Athletics as he is the Chancellor and AD Eaton can only do what the budget allows and support from others will let him do. WCU is on the lower end of the SoCon budget so really he is expected to do more with less. Although he is not perfect, I actually think Eaton and Belcher care about Athletics more than we give credit for and believe they would do more if they could.
Eaton and Belcher have already done more than former Chancellor Bardo who didn't care anything about Athletics and probably if he had had his way would have gotten rid of athletics all together. Eaton is a lot better than Chip Smith or Jeff Compher by a long shot.
I would like to see WCU do more for athletics and maybe in time we will, but I think Eaton and Belcher should be given a little more credit, they are doing a lot with their hands tied behind their back. To me although its not like a drastic change.
Also looking forward to catching the Catamounts baseball team a few games in about a week and a half.
Go Cats!!!

How are their hands tied behind their backs? Please give specific examples of things they have tried to do for athletics but were unable to do because "their hands are tied behind their backs". Our problems with Belcher and Eaton have nothing to do with hands being tied behind backs. That is an excuse and letting people off the hook who are not doing their jobs. It is a priority issue and nothing else. Athletics is not a priority at Western Carolina. It is plain and simple. Money is spent on other areas and not on athletics plain and simple. Arts and the Marching Band are more important at Western. What should we expect? We have a Piano major from Furman as our leader. Why would athletics be a priority? That is why we are suffering in all sports at Western.
