One reason is you have to have money to get the foreign athletes. What I mean with that is you need to have Kenyan's, Ethiopian's and be able to go to other countries and States to get athletes. Really a microcosm of what is going on in football. When you are locked into NC there is just not enough talent in the distance events. In track and field, the middle distance, sprints and field events, the talent pool is much better in the State and the region. Look at Arkansas who has the best Cross Country program in the Nation, two Kenyans, two Australians, British and Irish runners. You have to reach out in that sport. ETSU owned the Cross Country domain in the SoCon for years because they had an Irish pipeline of runners such as Ed Leddy, Neil Cusack, Adrian Leek, Dennis Stark, Seamus Hines, Seams Powers, Thomas O'Gara, etc. The Bucs had 46 All-Americans in Cross Country, most of them foreigners, under Coach Dave Walker.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know enough about distance running to understand the problem. What you say make perfect sense now.
