Furman and Wofford - I know they are small schools, but that is pathetic for what is supposed to be a budding rivalry game between teams that claim to be a couple of the best in the conference. Amazed they have a smaller crowd than WCU does with the students on break. I wateched a good bit of the Citadel game, and I thought their crowd might have been even a little bigger than reported (although the away crowd is always small at their games). I was at the WCU game, if there was 3 thousand in the stands, I'll eat my WCU hat. I was also listening to the WCU radio broadcast, and even Gary Ayers made a comment about the crowd size not being anywhere close to the announced 7k, he mentioned it also included tickets sold, not just butts in the seats (my paraphrase of his comments). Around 500 of the attendance was the band, cheerleaders & dance team. After the band played at halftime, and the usual stream of people leaving, the eastern stands looked like a ghost town after all the band parents left. Also, during the radio broadcast, Greg McLamb called out one of the offensive line players (by name), saying for three straight plays, that particular player did not block anyone. Al I can say is this team is in sad shape.

On the broadcast, they seldom show the East side. The West side always has a decent crowd (although many tend to sit and golf clap rather than stand and cheer), so it is usually pretty hard to gauge what the overall size of attendance is. At least on a TV broadcast, WCU ALWAYS looks way better than other schools because when they show the other side's stands, you typically see a few hundred to maybe a thousand at every school except Western and Mercer.

On the broadcast, they seldom show the East side. That is due to the fact that the main camera is placed on top of the announcer's booth on the East side.

One factor besides losing 2 straight going into this game was the fact that Fall Break for the students was last week so there were about 3000 students that would normally be there. Homecoming will be a big attendance game. We always fill it up for homecoming even when we only won 2 games in a year.

Nov. 3, 2018
Western Carolina (Citadel) - Attendance: 10,499 Mercer (ETSU) - Attendance: 10,002 Samford (Wofford) - Attendance: 5,821 Furman (Chattanooga) - Attendance: 4,332 VMI (Tusculum) - Attendance: 3,617
It's interesting that Furman playing Chattanooga only drew 4k fans. If Western were 4-2 in the SoCon, Whitmire would be in sell-outs.......

If my math is right, we have reported 42731 through 4 games (10683/game). I expect a drop-off next week, but if we report at least 7269 WCU will end up with an average of 10k per game again this year. Very impressive support (at least in tickets sold) given the 3-6 record, but what else is new. I also thought the crowd looked big to start with yesterday - was a little surprised it wasn't 11k or more.

Like Gary & Greg said on the radio after the game - it would have been about 13,000 if the students had come in from the parking lot.

I think the students that stayed in the parking lot, knew something that the 10k fans in the stands didn't.
