Why was the unc thread moved to "members only". Is the members only folders limited to participants that pay some sort of fee? I've been on this board for years and never knew I didn't have access to a members only folder. Was curious what others thought about our last game of the season. Did we just completely go insane mode and start taking out our hostilities towards each other and the thread was moved?
With that said, I'll add my thoughts. 1-For some reason a 3-8 WCU team scores more and allows less points than a 7 win team from last year. I guess UNC either is all that much more worse off than they were last year or WCU pulled together one last time for the seniors and buttoned up on the mistakes that have plagued us all season. 2-This thought is more of an overarching view of the season that was. I never realized what having an inexperienced defense could do to an otherwise promising season. WCU needs to beef up at DL, DB and linebacker positions. I sure hope we have some guys that are talented who are just waiting for their turn. Special teams play killed us so many times this year as well and, likely, cost us a few wins against some really good teams. I really hope we NEVER let special teams ruin otherwise well played games again. The team and coaches need to circle the wagons, figure some things out and hopefully never look back from this day forward.

I don’t understand how or reasons to move the Threads. That’s a admin question. To answer part 1 of your question UNC played a lot of subs. Les Miles son was 3 rd string qb and played most of second half. They also played freshman running back and Brooks a 5th string running back. I saw a lot of clean blue uniforms in the second half and especially 4 th quarter. I did think that WCU played hard the entire game with us playing very few subs. I guess we will have to wait and see what another year brings us. I m very proud of the effort and hard work displayed by the players!!!! Thankful for all the Seniors that will be graduating I wish them the best of luck!!!!

catamount.boards.net/thread/7919/members-boardIn my opinion, all the "fire Speir" posts, as well as, all the "keep Speir, he's great" posts have become a little boring, at least to me. I'd just like to have them in a place where everyone is not subjected to that drumbeat either for or against unless they chose to enter that board. The members-only board is completely open for both sides to go at it, with little or no moderation. If you get mad at each other from something said on that board, I'm sorry, you were warned.

Many have talked about investment in the program, but you are only scratching the surface:
The same coaches that don't stick around because of poor compensation are the coaches responsible for what is usually a two or three year investment in recruits. They leave for better compensation and the recruits lose interest in WCU or follow the coach to the new team. You end of with multiple Defensive Coordinators in 5 years and you start 9 freshman on defense that are being coached with a new or different defensive scheme. WCU has one of the top offenses in the FCS and you have one common theme, a fairly consistent coaching staff.
For those that really care you should ask deeper questions. Compared to other SoCon schools how does WCU recruiting budget compare? Are our coaches allowed to stay on the road as long as other SoCon programs, make multiple visits to really understand the character of the players they are recruiting, etc.
You like to compare WCU to Appalachian but here is the thing you need to dig deeper into. Jerry Moore was close to termination for his first 5 years at Appalachian because he took over a terrible program with bad character and cleaned house. Now if you look at the final results here is what you have, Moore compiled a 215-87 record in his 24 seasons at Appalachian State, including 10 Southern Conference championships, 18 postseason appearances and an unprecedented three-straight NCAA Division I FCS/I-AA national titles (2005-07). In 31 years as a head coach, Moore was 242-135-2, (55%) which is good for 15th all-time among NCAA Division I coaches. Moore passed coaching legends Bo Schembechler (234 victories), Billy Joe (237) and Woody Hayes (238) on the all-time wins list.
I hope the members only board is focusing on what is important to take WCU to the next step. Maybe a coaching change is the right answer, but the school has made multiple attempts to change the staff and the current staff is the only staff in many years to deliver at least one 7 year winning season in a lot of years. Starting so many true freshman on defense is a recipe for a 3 win season and getting to this point started 3-4 years ago with all the defensive staff changes.
Maybe instead of spreading out money from the money games that the football team plays (sometimes 2 per season), they should make an investment in the part of the athletic program that is helping to fund the rest of the athletic program, namely the football program.

RE: Recruiting budget. I've been told by AD admin staff member that out recruiting budget has finally been increased to where it is on par with the top recruiting budgets in our conference. However, this has been in place only this year.

The recruiting budget didn't cost us the playoffs in the 7 win seasons. Scheduling D2 schools and not making the right decisions in the critical game moments did that. Recruiting budgets also didn't cause the 2 and 3 win seasons.

Recruiting budgets also didn't cause the 2 and 3 win seasons. Its obvious what the problem is but on here you will be told it’s the BOT or now recruiting budgets. I guess the money is what makes or in WCU s case doesn’t make adjustments at halftime. Wake up and look at the last games . We lost three games in a row that we leads of 15points 15points then 13 points. Now you know what that is !!!

" Now you know what that is !!!" Yes, I do. It's called youth and inexperience. No amount of coaching can overcome that until the youth and inexperience has run it's course and that comes with age and experience. Can't coach that. BUT NOT SO FAST, as the old coach Corso says on College Game Day. Before you all jump my arse about posting dribble in support of the coaching staff, I say this. First, we are 7 years into this staff. Our staff "hung their hats" on their collective ability to get out there and recruit. Well, then explain to me how we get these youth and experience gaps. After 7 years of great recruiting, we should have a stable of "next man up" talent to fill in gaps. We should NOT have these droughts where we are starting so many freshmen and inexperienced sophomores, etc, etc. WCU over the past 7 years seems to have these wide gaps in offense, defense, and specialist players that are lopsided in tenure. To me, that screams of lack of recruiting acumen to get the right folks at the right time. I'm not so hung up in play calling as I am in how WCU staff is recruiting and their poor vision for what our team needs to add to the quiver of existing talent and experience. Second, the special teams coaching is my only gripe, but again I think comes down to lack of having a stable of experienced folks on the field. You have a great kicker that can't be protected?? Simple schemes, just not executed correctly.
If our coaches can't hone the skills of our experienced players next season, then I'll sing a different tune. But again, we'll be faced with a similar situation except on the O line side of the ball having to replace 4 or 5 seasoned O linemen. Again, another recruiting gap/drought not foreseen or dealt with early on.

We have all heard Speir say time and time again how he got what we needed in his recruiting classes. I still think our coaches haven’t made game situation adjustments as needed. Our talent level has been good enough to score in the first half of games but failed to score in the second half to secure a win in three of the last four games. Just something to think about these coaches allowed Ian to get hurt in a scrimmage and we don’t even attempt to block our opponents punts until the next to last game of the season. Do head Coaches not wear headsets during the game . I’d think they may want to know what’s going on before they watch it. With the improvements made on defense they should be a lot better next year. They did get better as the season went on. Hopefully we can build some depth and that will help on both sides of the ball.

The problem WCU has had for many years is hiring incompetent or not qualified Head Coaches & having to fire them because of their W/L Records. Just think about the Qualified HCs that WCU has turned down in the recent past, JMU Head Coach, ETSU Head Coach, & former Charleston Southern Head Coach & now Coastal Carolina Coach. Money & poor hiring decisions have lead to high turnover in the Head Coaching Position at WCU for years. What we have seen this past season amplifies my remarks. Nothing will happen this post season because of the money portion of my coaching turnover thoughts.
