Western Carolina redshirt sophomore RHP Chase Walter was today named Southern Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week by the league office for games played April 15-21. Also on Monday, Walter collected National Player of the Week plaudits for a second-consecutive week from Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Walter was dominant on the mound in game three of the SoCon series against Furman Saturday evening in Cullowhee, striking out a career-high 17 batters over a nine-inning, complete game effort. His 17 strikeouts are the most by a pitcher in the SoCon this spring – and the second-most in the NCAA to date. The Peachtree City, Ga., native limited the Paladins to just one run on six hits including five singles with just one walk. Walter struck out the side in three of the nine innings including fanning three-straight swinging in the ninth inning. Combined, Walter opened the game by retiring seven-straight Furman batters including four by strikeouts, before closing the game by sitting down eight-in-a-row with six Ks. Saturday’s complete-game effort is the second of Walter’s career, both coming against Furman. Last spring, Walter struck out eight in a four-hit win against the Paladins at Latham Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
