The Chattanooga game will be the game that decides the season for Western Carolina. If we win, we are still in contention for the playoffs and the conference championship. If we lose, we will have 3 losses and 2 conference losses which will make it very difficult to win the SoCon or make the playoffs. If we get healthy and improve during the bye week, then we have a shot to beat them. There is talent on this team and we can and will improve this year, but can we do it over the next couple of weeks so that we can still have a good season. I think our defense is better than it was last year. We still give up the occasional big play but all in all statistically and on the field they look better than they have. Our offense is not as good as in years past and I think that is mainly because of the young offensive line. That is the reason that we only throw quick passes to the outside and do not throw the ball down the field. There is not enough time for the play to develop and allow the receivers and tight ends get down the field so that we can stretch the field. That is why the play calling is very predictable which means that other coaches see this on film. That is also why we try to run the ball more than we have in past years. Also, our special teams have been atrocious. Other coaches are scheming on their kickoff and punt plays to take advantage of this weakness. Unless we fix the offensive line and the special teams quickly, we are not going to win many more ball games. I know the coaches say that many more wins are coming soon, but I think they are trying to put on a positive face for the players. By this point in the season, our coaches know that other coaches watch film and know our weaknesses and they will continue to exploit our weaknesses until we fix the problem.
I did not start the thread for all the sky is falling coach haters to pile on about how doomed we are. I too am very disappointed about our lack of leadership at Western at all level and especially in Athletics and football. No doubt that in football and in life, "you are what your record says you are". Period. Everything else is the "dog ate my homework" excuses. I just do not understand why some people think it helps to brag about how they were right and everybody else was wrong about the coaching staff and how they all warned us of the impending doom of all things athletics at Western Carolina. You were all right but as Catamount fans we should all want the same thing. We cannot continue to wallow in obscurity and accept the status quo. We either need to right this ship or get a new ship.

You were all right but as Catamount fans we should all want the same thing. We cannot continue to wallow in obscurity and accept the status quo. We either need to right this ship or get a new ship. You brought it up, so it deserves an answer. The folks like you that have vocally supported the Head Coach for the last 3 years, and all those fans that said nothing (thus giving your consent to the current staff) is why the current coach remains in Cullowhee. Had you folks headed the warning that have been brought up 3 or 4 years ago, we wound not be in the current situation we are in for football. It's not bragging to say you were warned, I just wish I would have listened to the folks telling us how unqualified for the job that the current head coach was. Lots of times, on-the-job training can bring amazing results, unfortunately it did NOT happen this time in Cullowhee. Now we have a head coach that is saying the same things he said the first and second years in the program for what is wrong with the program. His fixes didn't work then, it's not going to work now. It's time for more folks to speak up now, not for the folks that saw the writing on the wall to be quite.

I am not sure how anyone can believe that Speir or Eaton can right this ship. 7 years and a 35% winning record, Eaton obtains a contract extension for Speir and here we are. What kind of BOT do we have? How could they have allowed this extension while looking for a chancellor? Folks, we have a serious leadership issue. We will be lucky to win 3 games this year.
I say write all BOT members and express disappointment!

Flacat, I was not bragging but I was trying to State a fact. As you know, I was lambasted about my views on the hiring of Coach Speir. I was the one that stated Coach Speir was not qualified to be a Head Coach & I also made similar comments about Randy Eaton. I was not a Johnny Come Lately about this issue. My comments were made several years ago & no one agreed with me on this Board except for 72. I also had some of my posts moved to the “Members Only Board” because of the opposition to my comments. I took Coach Speir’s Resume & compared it to a list of attributes that I thought were necessary for a Coach to be successful at WCU. Fellas, that is when I started making posts on here that Coach Speir was not qualified to be the Head Coach at WCU. All it took to come to my conclusion was a little common sense & some deductive reasoning. Just remember that I was labeled as being negative on this Board & I had some posters that told me to leave this Board & find another team to support. All I want to see is a successful Football Program at WCU & have the type of coaches that the Football Players deserve. I just hate to hear people calling WCU’s Football Team a Cupcake Football Team.

I will agree that the Chattanooga game is a make or break game. If the team can rally and pull some momentum from last week's win, this season can be respectable. However, if we come out flat like we did against Mercer, we are staring down the barrel of a dreadful season

If the offensive play calling doesn't improve MASSIVELY, then the UTC game won't matter, nor will any of the rest of the games.
It's time to bring this "co-offensive play calling" duties experiment to an end and get a proven offensive coordinator on staff!!

With what was a relatively "high-flying" offense last year, UTC shut-down the Cats. Tyrie's injury had something to do with it, but we couldn't do anything offensively because of the constant pressure they put on us even with all the returning starting lineman. Fast forward to 2019, and UTC does not have the same defense but has a somewhat more productive offense. And I would expect them to follow the same game plan and send the house on defense against our now very young O-line.
I don't know officially if Tyrie is going to be back (just the mentions on this board), and even if he is I don't know how the team will do - we were certainly more explosive in the Mercer game, but it still was not a good showing. And the last 2 weeks have been horror shows on offense in my opinion. NC State was a "body bag" game, but we only had 106 TOTAL yards, and then against D2 NGU we only had 20 points and 345 yards. If we can't figure out a way to get at least 28 points I think we will have a hard time in all of the games left on the schedule.

We have to jump out To an early lead and hope that Tyrie is back with a vengeance..

Would we have to pay Spiers for 5 yrs. if we dropped football? I have watched APP ,GA.SOUTHERN,LIBERTY and others pass us by and we have dropped to the bottom of the SOCO. A conference that we should dominate. I say its time to drop football and accept defeat.

Please explain what good dropping football will do other than appease you and others with getting rid of Speir? That seems to be the reasoning I hear from everyone. “Let’s drop football so we can get rid of Speir and start it back later on” 🤷🏽♂️
