I wonder how much this distracted the staff in preparation to the SoCon tournament. They have had to have known it for a while. I Gray and the staff will say no distraction at all of course but you know this took away from our preparation for the tournament. Water under the bridge but I wonder if Coach was not negotiating a new contract if he would have been more focussed on winning the Tournament in Asheville.

The silver lining is that it is a done deal and we can move on and find a better coach that wants to be in Cullowhee. If Gray is successful as the Beach Chickens coach, he will be there until a bigger school comes calling.

If Gray is successful as the Beach Chickens coach, he will be there until a bigger school comes calling. There is no loyalty to a school any longer for players or coaches. For coaches, it's a paycheck, and they will go to whoever will pay them the most. For players, their current school is just a steppingstone, if they do well, they take the step up. Neither the coaches or player feel any obligations to the school that gave them their start... This is now the society we live in, so don't get used to your coaches, if they are any good, a bigger school will steal them away, same with the players.

More good news. J Gray has to pay Western $200K based on his contract. I guess CCU will write that check in the next 30 days. I wonder why they did not wait until the end of March. Would have saved them $100K.
Termination by Coach: a) Coach may terminate this Agreement without cause at any time by giving written notice to WCU; provided, however, that In the event that Coach terminates this Agreement without cause prior to the end of the term, Coach will pay to WCU as liquidated damages the following sum, as applicable: • For a termination occurring on or before 3/31/2022 - $400,000; or • For a termination occurring on or before 3/31/2023 - $300,000; or • For a termination occurring on or before 3/31/2024 - $200,000; or • For a termination occurring on or before 3/31/2025 - $100,000; or • For a termination occurring after 3/31/2025 - $25,000.00
if anyone wants to see the full contract, I will post. It is in section 7 of the contract. Looks iron clad to me.
GO CATS!!!

Always loopholes in that stuff. It just says he has to give written notice. He could have given 30-days notice that would keep him on the books until after 3/31. I have no idea if that is true, but there is always fine print.

Here is the entire contract. Section 7 is the section. Please point out the loopholes. Why would they try to cheat us out of it? www.scribd.com/document/508754996/Justin-Gray-Employment-Agreement-4-13-21

I would need to see his CCU contract to know when it officially starts. As I said, I have no idea how it is playing out. I was just saying there is always "legalese" in all these things. Either way we would get between $100-$200k. CCU has plenty of money, so I am sure they don't care about that - they are more interested in naming a coach quickly so they can go ahead and start building their next roster.
I am also not busting Gray for making this decision. Just like many of us have said many times over, whenever we get good coaches we know if they are successful it is generally a matter of time before they move on to something bigger or perceived as better.

Gray was in the Ramsey office this morning and walked office to office and said thank you. From fellow coaches to entry level staff.

Gray was in the Ramsey office this morning and walked office to office and said thank you. From fellow coaches to entry level staff. I believe he is a good guy and I wish we had him for at least one more year. I also believe that he has been in negotiations for at least a couple of weeks with CCU. How could that not distract from game prep? And, what if we had moved forward and won the tournament? There’s at least two more weeks before he would be done here.

Gray was in the Ramsey office this morning and walked office to office and said thank you. From fellow coaches to entry level staff. He’s going to do his best not to burn any bridges. Anyone who leaves a job should always do that. It is just smart business. Let’s face it. We all knew that he was leaving as soon as he could the moment he took the job with Western. If he wins 20 or more in a couple of years and takes CCU to the tourney, he is leaving there too. That is not his final destination. Unless they have millions of dollars to throw at him. They may have deep pockets but they don’t have Furman money where they can pay him $2.2 million a year like they pay Richie.
