So let's say Gray leaves does this along with Prosser not staying long mean Western is not a desirable stop? Is it the location? Is it the pay? I ask these questions because the SoCon, as a conference has not been a bad conference

I don’t know where we rank in head basketball coach pay in the SoCon, but you already have given the reason you think he will leave. You said his wife does not like Cullowhee and that he was never going to stay over 3 years. Others have said he is not happy with his contract and that he has to pay out of his own pocket for uniforms and pay the salary out of his own pocket for an assistant coach. Based on all of that, I don’t think we have a problem. After all, if he leaves for what is perceived as a better job after 3 years, I think a lot of young up and coming coaches will want the job, because they can see that a coach can use our job as a stepping stone. This is better for us than to have to fire a coach every 4 or 5 years. To me that is much worse than a coach coming and moving on for a perceived better job. Again, I don’t know the rankings of coaches pay in the SoCon but I think we are competitive. I am sure that Furman, UNCG, ETSU and Chatt probably pay more but that’s a guess.

I ask these questions because the SoCon, as a conference has not been a bad conference I'm sure the location had a lot to do with Prosser leaving. Real estate is not affordable, that with the remote location makes for difficulty in attracting and maintaining staff, instructors/professors, and coaches. Try to live on a asst. coach's pay in Cullowhee....

If he does leave and we do not offer the job to an internal candidate and we lose most of our talent, it might not take a new coach long to build a winner with the portal.

I have heard our pay is competitive to other SoCon schools. The one thing to keep in mind the last three coaches we have had the wives of said coaches hated the location of the school. I have not heard the same complaints on the football side with our past and current coaches though

His current base salary (not counting incentives) is $275,828. I'd say that puts us middle of the road in the SoCon. Prosser took a pay cut to move back to Rock Hill, SC - "He signed the agreement July 1 and will make $210,000 per year in base salary through June 30, 2026." Earl's salary at UTC, head men's basketball coach: $366,900 Savage (ETSU) gets a five-year contract with an annual base salary of $202,000. He also receives a $38,000 annual stipend for additional duties, such as media duties and community relations. Conroy's (The Citadel) five-year contract runs through April 30, 2027, and extends for another season if he's still the coach in April 2023. His starting base salary is $225,000 per year, and rises to $250,000 in 2024 and $275,000 in 2026. Wilson (VMI) agreed to a five-year contract. He will reap $200,000 annually in base pay Bob Richey (Furman) - $2.2 million (hard to believe in the SoCon, but here you go... www.sportskeeda.com/college-basketball/bob-richey-net-worth-salary-contract

I have not heard the same complaints on the football side with our past and current coaches though Coach Speir and Coach Bell were both raised in rural areas and they both love the mountains. Before that, Coach Briggs and Coach Hodgins loved the mountains also. We were lucky to get Coach Bell. I hear his wife loves the mountains. I have found that most Florida natives love the mountains when they move from Florida. Coach Bell has lived a lot of places and I have heard from others that this is his favorite stop so far. We could still lose Coach Bell though if a P5 program comes knocking with the right amount of cash. We all knew we were going to lose Kade. He is young and up and coming. Money talks. I was pissed when we heard he is leaving. Who could blame him though?

Wow on Richie’s Salary. Who can blame him for staying at Furman? He needs a better financial advisor though. He makes $2.2 million before incentives and his net worth is only $5 million. lol.

Why not consider the UNCA head coach? He's done a lot on a shoestring budget.
