According to Catamountsports.com the Cats will be coming back from Florida to face Brevard then Catawba in back to back home games. Will this affect turnout for the first games very much, and are there any true positives in this? It is certainly sad to be in a place where you have to play two DII teams, but could it help our team to prepare for the tougher play? I'd be happy if they got some confidence and momentum to head into road games with Furman and Presby. What do you think, is this going to only hurt us or will it help generate some momentum in the program for the early season?

I expect that it was a combination of things that resulted in 2 non-DI games. The need to have 6 home games and the critical need for wins early in the season are probably both contributors to the scheduling. While I'd prefer only one or no non-DI games on the schedule, I can understand why WCU made the move.
However, Samford also has two non-DI games on their schedule and are expected to challenge for the championship. If the Cats can win BIG on these two games, it can be a good thing. But if the games are close, and should we lose one or both, it could turn into a disaster for the morale of a young team.

I feel pretty much the same as Purplecat, I typically dont attend the D2 game on the schedule usually opting for a weekend in Chapel Hill or Cincinatti as I figure we SHOULD win that game. I never saw the crowd excited over a Mars Hill win the way we were excited over an OT field goal against Elon. I think going to USF and staying in the game does more for morale than blowing out two opponents from a lower division. In the past it seemed we could only attract D2 level players that seemed it was WCU or play at North Greeneville or some other D2 program. I see that changing. We have the talent on the roster and we have a good coaching staff to turn this program around. Everything is in place to have a winning record for years to come. No reason that within the next couple years WCU is not a contender for a conference title year in and year out

With this year's schedule the way it is we will definitely find out early what kind of team we have. If you pay attention to most FBS teams they have lighter schedules early in the season also. My hope is we compete will with South Florida, beat Brevard and Catawba handily to prepare us for our conference play. About playing 2 DII teams in the beginning, I have no problem with that as long as we win.

About playing 2 DII teams in the beginning, I have no problem with that as long as we win. There is a risk in playing down, just ask Michigan or former head coach Dennis Wagner. If you had been in the stands in September 11, 2010 as the Cats were blown out by Tusculum 54-30, you might have a very different opinion about playing DII games.

Again, as I said, we are a FCA team and if we want to grow as a program we need to be able to beat DII and not fear them. USF. Alabama, Auburn, Middle Tennessee State, Marshall, and Georgia Tech booked us with out the fear of losing. I don't ever fear losing or being at a loss as long as we grow as a team. My hope is that last year was a learning year and this year we bust some heads and take no prisoners. I respect all programs but I fear none.

....... if we want to grow as a program we need to be able to beat DII and not fear them. I was in the stands in 2010. There was no fear of playing them from Catamount fans or the coaching staff that year. Losing to Tusculum was unthinkable. Sometimes you just don't know you should be afraid. We were not afraid of Mars Hill last season, but only survived that game by 7 points, 30-23. We had to pull out 20 points in the 4th quarter, or that one would have been our second loss to a DII team in 3 years.

But we won the Mars Hill game and we also won the Elon game. Once the team gets used to winning you'll see those close games we lost become wins. I am an optomist at the beginning of every season until I am proven wrong but here is my assessment of some of the losses last year. Citadel we should have won and Wofford we should have won. Could you imagine what we would be talking about if we had won those two? I can't wait to see what the fall and actual season brings. Hope to see you at the scrimmage Saturday.

I am an optimist at the beginning of every season.... I've been an optimist about Catamount football opening every football season since 1968. However, over the years, I've also become more of a realist since the Kent Briggs & Dennis Wagner era(s). Now, I'll just wait to see it, before I start with the unrealistic expectations I've displayed in the past. Citadel we should have won and Wofford we should have won. Could you imagine what we would be talking about if we had won those two? Just one problem. We lost those games. Close losses last season does not guarantee ANY wins this season.
