Simple: If our defense improves and our offense stays the course, WCU wins. I don't think the few hundred Furman fans that will show up to watch will give them the "12th man" factor, so it should all boil down to play on the field. Hopefully, play review of crucial calls against us that will inevitably happen will take that aspect out of the game as a tipping point to a win vs. a loss. Thank goodness for replay or else we'd have a couple of key players not playing this week.

I'm going to go if I can get enough honey-do chores done before about 10am on Saturday.

On Tyrie's possible targeting, that was in the first half. So had it stood he would have missed the rest of the VMI game but been good to start against Furman. Tillman's was in the second half, so he would have missed the rest of VMI and the first half of Furman. Targeting comes with an ejection for the rest of the game you are playing in, plus the first half of the next game if the call happened in the second half. We just saw this with Gooden at Samford - late targeting against him at FSU kept him out the first half against Mercer. Don't get me wrong - I didn't want to be without either. But Tyrie was not going to miss time against FU regardless.

So I knew we were young/inexperienced on D (given some of the guys aren't FR or RS FR but this is their first year starting), and I even did some of the comparison of our 2nd team D to others in the conference. But I just fully realized that EVERY position except S has a FR or RS FR as the backup (6 of them true FR), and I would imagine those guys see plenty of action as we rotate guys in.
That could be good for later in the season (and future seasons), but we need the young 'uns all to step up starting this week.

On paper, this looks like Western is far superior, but I would say that the 3 teams Furman has played are better than the 3 teams we have played so it is difficult for me to draw any conclusions from this. All I know is that they beat us by 3 touchdowns in Cullowhee last year and we best remember that if we want to have any chance of winning on Saturday. We are definitely not world beaters and I just hope that these young players don't have the big head because we are 3 and 0. I hope the coaches are explaining to these kids that we have played the 3 weakest teams on our schedule. If we do come out overconfident, Furman will clean our clock because they are hungry. It is the coaches job to make sure he checks these kids attitudes and makes sure they understand that if we are not ready, we will get beat.

I can only judge by what I heard coach say post game, but I think he and the team know they were fortunate to escape the VMI game with a win. My guess is that the defensive side of the ball was a primary focus starting on Sunday.
I am expecting drastic improvements on our pass defense and tackling against Furman. The thing that worries me, is that we get too confident in our run defense. We haven't played a contending team yet, so I don't know what our true abilities are.
I know our offense is strong, but we can't expect to score 50+ every game. We are going to have to be able to win a 17-13 type of game somewhere down the road if we expect a winning season.
