Coaching staff did not fumble twice in red zone. Coaching staff did not miss tackles. Coaching staff did not miss blocks. I’m not a firm believer that coaches alone lose games. Responsibility lies with all on the field.

Don’t disagree at all. My kid has played there 5 years, he is his toughest critic. The offense to a man would say they lost that game. They needed to do better. I’m tired of the excuses over the same issues throughout the team year after year. Players are held accountable, I at least know 100% on the OL they are. Coaches should be too. My son and the other OL guys love their position coach, would do anything for him, as I believe he would for them. There are more important things in life then winning my football games, I know this too. I’m ,like most on here ,frustrated. These kids want to win and make a run at the playoffs.

We lost a football game we should have won, and looked terrible in doing so. So.... all take a deep breath and start correcting what's wrong.
When my daughter was running high school xc, one of her teammates went over to her mother after losing a competition. She was in tears because she didn't win. I'll never forget her mother's quote "Darling, if you want to finish in a better place, you must run faster". Pretty good advice!

Do you think the season is lost or that that the players will push harder to improve and win? Don’t disagree at all. My kid has played there 5 years, he is his toughest critic. The season isn’t lost, don’t believe that all. I’m very proud of the players yesterday. They never quit. The SoCon is wide open this season imho. One game at a time is where our focus needs to be.

Totally agree with you. This offense is designed to score quickly on big plays. The example of this is the first TD against Furman that took only 1 1/2 minutes. Western’s Offense can score a lot of points & build great offensive stats just like the Cats did last year. Keep in mind the Cats had great offensive stats last year and WCU finished in 4th place. With the defense the Cats have this season, the offense has got to control the time of possession & limit the opposition’s offense to a minimal number offensive plays as possible. Scoring 38 points & gaining close to 600 yards on offense is no good if your defense gives up over 40 points. I hope the Coaching Staff can come up with a game plan that reduces the number of times the defense has to run onto the field. I disagree in part...scoring 38 points and having almost 600 yard of offense is always good...but it could have been better. It's not good to give up over 40 points, ever. I also think you always hit the home run play. If you can score on a long pass play every series, you do just that. The job of the Offense is to score. We aren't Wofford or The Citadel. It's the job of the D to get the ball back to the offense, in the form of a TO or a punt. who cares how long it takes, or doesn't take the offense to score. Our offense scoring in less than 100 seconds has nothing to do with our D giving up a 3rd and long for a first down, or a kick off returned for a TD, or bad penalties that extend drives for the other team...nothing. Do you think the furman D gave a crap that the KO return for a TD took less than 20 seconds? Do you think our D gets upset when we score quick on offense? Controlling the clock has been used against the Catamount’s Offense for years by Wofford. They have been very successful against us using this game plan. By the way, how many times have they participated in the playoffs since Coach Speir became HC as compared to WCU? Everybody in the SoCon knows that WCU has major issues with their defense. What would you do to protect a bad defense? I don’t give a dang about stats but I do look at the scoreboard at the end of each game. I also know that we had numerous excellent athletes on the Catamount Football Teams in the past as well as on the present team. With these excellent players, they stayed at home and watched other teams play in the playoffs. The question is what can be done by the offensive plan that would limit the opposition to fewer possessions & reduce the amount of time the defense would have to spend on the field. The objective of Football is to win games. The mark of a good Football Coach is to evaluate the state of the Football Team & make necessary adjustments to put his team in a position to win Football Games. I also think this years Football Team has more depth on offense & these players could adjust to any offensive scheme the coaches could throw at them. Samford will beat our brains out if the Cats do not make adjustments in their game plan. The Spread Offense was a new offense when App State used it to win 3 National Championships. Teams have now adjusted to it & recruited players to match up with the receivers. I’m just suggesting that doing the same thing over & over and expecting a different results does not make sense to me.

I worry the coaches can not get the team prepared through film study and practice. They have not come to play at the start of any of the games this year The season isn’t lost, don’t believe that all. I’m very proud of the players yesterday. They never quit. The SoCon is wide open this season imho. One game at a time is where our focus needs to be.

Jim64, You and I agree that stats don't win games - look at VMI's passing. Teams have adjusted to the "spread" and are we so damned lazy to try something that teams may have not planned for - ala two "speedy" backs in the same backfield. And another "lazy" coached example - they play number 90 (a great player) all game without much rest - my analysis - the coaches are lazy and stupid to not have another nose guard with experience ready for next year. There are lots of good freshmen defensive linemen who could help us now - but no we "decide" to redshirt them and risk having an "awful" season this year because they are set in their brains on redshirting. Think to you're paralyzed is not coaching.

I totally agree that #90 is worn out because he is getting relied on so much. As for the redshirting - I think we had a guy who looked like he was going to be a good FR D-lineman, but isn't he getting redshirted because he was hurt? As for the rest of the defense, per last week's 2-deep EVERY position except Safety had a true FR (6 of the positions) or RS FR (the other 4) as the backup. That is on top of us starting 2 RS and 1 true FR already. So of our top-22 defenders, 13 are FR or RS FR.
That points to the problem being that we spent the first several recruiting classes under Speir focused on offense. Some of the kids we are getting now look like they will be good, but they actually ARE getting used right now and the inexperience is showing (so rotating those young guys in because we have to rather than want to).
And the tragic loss of Cam Brown really hurts us on D. He was one of the top defensive recruits we have landed in a long time, and he would have been a kicking-butt RS FR or SO playing LB this season had he won his battle with cancer. Based on his character and drive (and on the film I saw of him), had he been playing college football he would have been an all-conference type of kid somewhere on the field.

This is not Speir's first or second or even third recruiting class. If my memory is correct, Speir is in his 7th season as HC. That means he's brought in 7 recruiting classes to this point. Any coach, given 7 classes should be able to recruit to fill both the offense and defense with the players they need to win. With that many classes under his belt, IF he were going to be able to get the job done, it would be done by now. Also, if memory serves me correctly, for the last several classes, he's made the statement that he (his staff) had brought in the personnel needed to fill the holes that needed to be filled (or something to that effect). Either he and his staff is not a good judge of talent, or the staff can't coach the talent they have, or somebody has been blowing smoke up somebody's butts for a while.
