Randy was on board & he was involved in hiring Speir. Randy not Speir did not have experience for the jobs they were hired to do.

What kind of an AD would lock in their advance schedule on a verbal agreement? If Eaton locked in a home & home with only a verbal agreement, then he got what he deserved. However, it's the Catamount fans that have to pay the price of having to watch the Cats play non-Division I teams for two years, as well as, the football team having to play the price of reduced opportunity for two years of winning enough D-I games to qualify for the playoffs. Also with a verbal agreement, the offending DCS team did not even have to play a game guarantee for pulling out of a "signed contract" Where did this guy learn to be an AD - on-the-job experience, just like the HC he hired. I'm sure you have plenty of experience with the negotiations and dealings when it comes to scheduling football teams. Please enlighten us on how this process is supposed to go and the normal time it takes to sign a contract. More than likely the school that was scheduled decided to go for their own money game of some sort and cancelled the contract with Western. When that happened very few schools had room left on their schedule and we had to settle. When a signed contract is reneged on by either party, the party that backs out will have to pay out bucks for doing so. The example of this is when WCU signed a contract with North Dakota State a few years ago & had to pay NDS for backing out of the contract. WCU played a BCS School instead for the money.

I am not suggesting WCU should do this, but would the Cats be better off taking a second bye week instead of playing a D2 school that offers no "value" to the schedule? I don't think schools are required to play 12 games next year, but they have the option to Playing a non-D-I team is like not playing a game at all, for the purpose of playoff eligibility. However, the non-DI game does give you an additional home game with the game proceeds that go with it. I don't think it does anything for the fans, just like Alabama fans are not happy about playing Western Carolina. I do not like having our players humiliated when they play a Power 5 Team. It is like prostituting the players for money because the University is too sorry to fund our players like other institutions in the SoCon. What is so insulting is WCU does not give a d$$n about this & could care less how this impacts the Alumni or the negative image it projects about WCU. I have a lot of Western Carolina jackets, hats, stadium seats etc & I’m ashamed to wear them except when I go to a WCU Game. I’m tired of getting asked if Western has a Football Team or does WCU have a Basketball Team. People think our Athletic Programs are a joke & we should drop Football & get out of the SoCon liked ETSU did many years ago. At least WCU would not have to pay the big bucks to get out of the SoCon. It is sad that a bunch of Academics are so shortsighted & do not understand how a strong Athletic Program can improve the image of an institution. Randy should not be condemned for his comments about academics because he is just repeating what he is being told by Academic idiots that WCU has accumulated in the White Building.

Assuming that as normally happens we have to scrape together this last home game, does anybody know actual options? Like all of you I would prefer to avoid non-D1 teams. The Pioneer isn’t real helpful, but at least it counts more towards playoff consideration. Is playing somebody like Stetson (they went 8-2 this year) better than playing Davidson? Would a second Big South game be better (Campbell) than any of them (probably)? How about any of the HBCU like A&T or SC State? How about North Alabama? They seem to already have a little respect even though they are a transitioning program. Might mean they need to find games.
Pretty much all of those have been mentioned (maybe not Stetson), and all would seem like teams we should be trying to get on our schedules just like some of the OVC teams (EKU is coming up). But has anybody “in the know” heard about who we are realistically pursuing? Anybody looked at teams with actual open dates? I was going to look and see what I could find regarding these team’s 2019 and future schedules. Scheduling is hard, but it is not rocket science.

Per Mercer’s press release, the Cats and Bears open the season against each other on 8/31 in Cullowhee and the GWU game must be later. I hate conference games in week #1, but it has been the norm in the SoCon for the past few seasons.

i actually really like having a conference game week 1........it gives our coaches and players 9 months to prepare instead of 1 week.
now the down side is you have no prior film to study, just basing schemes on information from the previous season.

If we lose to an NAIA team , it might the end of AD and COACH. Big risk. I for one will be staying home that Saturday and watching a good game.

It's a D-2 team not NAIA.

If it's a non-DI game (makes no difference if it's DII or DIII or NAIA), it will not count toward the FCS playoffs. We continue to do this to ourselves. In a season with 12 potential games, we schedule 2 FBS games and 1 non-DI game. That's three games off the top we know will not help us in the need for 7 or better DI wins. That leaves 9 games to get at least 7 wins. Good Luck.
