FLCatamount......Do you have the exact amounts that you could post that backup your assertions? Post year by year....2012 coming forward. This is a very serious problem if true. Give us the facts, just the facts. I am terribly disturbed if this is true. I might even totally quit giving. It is true & it has been posted on this Board numerous times.

They appear to be doing very well. Look at the empty Seats after halftime and you will see what the band has to do with football. We let on like the crowds come for the football games lol. 3-8 seasons don’t keep the stands full. My statement was the Football Program needs the support or focus that the Band has. You seem to know right much about the Band. How much money is the University putting into a Band that consists of 500 or more students? How are their travel expenses paid or what is the overall cost to the University including Music Scholarships? No Sir I actually don’t know much about the band. I was told that about the band at the last home game ! I thought they might be getting some of the money Football should be getting but I’ve been told on here they get it from the music department. I’m 100 percent Football that’s why the game is called football not band event on Saturdays in the Fall.

Band funding comes from the students through an activity fee similar to the fund supporting Sports at WCU.

Have you not been reading any of the threads in this place recently? I only ask because it has been discussed to death. To sum it up the administration needs to invest more in sports and Speir needs to make changes to his staff if he wants to remain as the coach. You have arguments about whether he can actually bring us a championship but those circle back to the administration. Long story short I don't see Speir getting fired for those calling for it in the off season. If he actually produces a winning season I can see the AD giving him a 2-3 year extension. We are not replacing the press box so don't ask (I won't go into the practice field fiasco). Anything else that needs to be covered? A championship isn't required to make the FCS. It is desirable but not totally necessary. We came close a few years ago but lost out to one of the Illinois MVC schools with a worse record. That, I attribute to a lack of political influence with the selection committee. That is an administrative issue.

The band as well as the student athlete support center are the two focuses of giving Tuesday coming up next week.

WCU athletic budgets 2013-14 $9,962,768 2014-15 $10,319,309 2015-16 $10,884,217 2016-17 $11,439,777 www.wcu.edu/WebFiles/PDFs/BudgetOfficeAthleticsFinal201415.pdfwww.wcu.edu/WebFiles/PDFs/BudgetOffice201516AthPresentation.pdfwww.wcu.edu/WebFiles/PDFs/BudgetOffice201617AthleticsChancellorHearing.pdf

Jerry - those numbers show our total revenues, but it is a little hard to decipher what actually comes from the university. Clearly student fees do, and there is a category for "Intra University Transfer" that is pretty low. All of the others are what we actually generate from games, Catamount Club, sponsorships, royalties, SoCon payouts, etc. Can anybody verify if the student fees and the "Intra University Transfer" numbers makes up in total what the school allocates to athletics? Seems that way, and the numbers would be:
Year
| Athletic Fees
| Intra Univ xFer
| Catamount Club
| Sponsorships
| 2013-2014
| $5,394,000
| $667,000
| $850,000
| $235,000
| 2014-2015
| $5,669,200
| $667,000
| $1,020,000
| $278,500
| 2015-2016
| $6,109,875
| $667,000
| $1,175,000
| $325,250
| 2016-2017
| $6,070,151
| $667,000
| $1,312,500
| $390,000
|
Now there are some other categories sprinkled in there that could come from/be allocated by University funds (nutrition initiative, athletic foundation, endowment transfers, etc.). But given the overall revenue/budget only goes up roughly $400-$500k each year, the Cat Club and Sponsorship increases seem to make up about 1/2 of that while there is absolutely no variance in the Intra University Transfer amount (it seems fixed at $667,000 each year).
Also note - I ***think*** things for facilities and major upgrades would be handled outside of these budgets - these seem to be purely the OpEx items of revenue and expenses for athletic operations.

I am not sure if you are saying this is what Western should do, and if you are saying that, I respectably disagree. Coach Speir is our coach for at least one more year win or lose and I for one hope he will be the coach for the next 20 years if he wants to coach that long. There is nothing wrong with Coach Wiley who has 10 SoCon Championship Rings and 3 FCS Championship rings or with Coach Weaver who has at least 1 National Championship Ring and 3 conference championship rings. The issue with Western football for most of the past 35 years. It was a coaching problem with Speirs' predecessor and with Coach Strahm who was Bob Waters immediate successor. Coach Strahm was a horrible choice but everyone knows this. We need to give our coaches what they need to win. Look what App has done. They have upgrade facilities and pay their coaches more so they don't have a revolving door of assistant coaches. We also need to increase our recruiting budget to above all other teams in the SoCon and start having a vision for the future which would include moving up from FCS. Our leadership (hired help) is void of a vision and in the long run it will hurt them and it will hurt Western. That is our problem and we do NOT have a coaching problem. I just wish all of these Speir haters on here that think they no best would just wait until next year when his contract is up. All of the grousing and complaining will not change that Speir is our man for at least another year.

I am not sure if you are saying this is what Western should do...... Bingo. IMO, Speir should clean house on the defensive side of the ball. If he doesn't do this, we'll have another 3 or 4 win season next year. Speir will then have 5 losing season out of 8, with the last two back to back. That gets a coach fired. So, if he likes his job, he needs to take action with the defensive staff, and find someone that knows what to do on special teams.
