What does the band have to do with the football program?
They appear to be doing very well. Look at the empty Seats after halftime and you will see what the band has to do with football. We let on like the crowds come for the football games lol. 3-8 seasons don’t keep the stands full. My statement was the Football Program needs the support or focus that the Band has. Stop performing at halftime & then see what happens to the Marching Band. Maybe a trip to ETSU will help your thinking about how important a Marching Band is to a University. When ETSU dropped Football, the Marching Band disappeared.

When ETSU dropped Football, the Marching Band disappeared. Exactly. Without Football there is no marching band. Marching bands exists solely because a school has a football team. Please name one division one school with a full marching band that does not have a football team. So all of the band lovers better be glad that Western has a football team...

I am not sure if you are saying this is what Western should do...... Bingo. IMO, Speir should clean house on the defensive side of the ball. If he doesn't do this, we'll have another 3 or 4 win season next year. Speir will then have 5 losing season out of 8, with the last two back to back. That gets a coach fired. So, if he likes his job, he needs to take action with the defensive staff, and find someone that knows what to do on special teams. I generally agree with your posts but I do not think the defensive coaches are bad. I think we are young on defense. You might have a point about special teams though. Wiley is a proven defensive coach and no one can deny his record of achievement. I think the problem on defense is purely because of youth. Next year will tell because I believe our defense will be much better as all the Freshmen that played this year will be Sophomores.

my problem you use with the youth excuse is how do you explain all the young football teams that are winning alot of games this year? App State being one of them. Since this is not the pros, teams will always lose people to the draft and graduation but they still are good and win. Maybe the coaches recruits are not as good as they say.

Maybe the coaches recruits are not as good as they say. or maybe, some of our coaches are not as good as some posters on this board think. In total defense, Western Carolina ranked 115th out of 124 FCS teams this season. Two of the three teams WCU beat this year, ranked below the Cats, GWU at 116th and VMI at 120, of course, the 3d team we beat was D2, Newberry. Two years ago, the AD made Speir fire the DC when WCU ranked 121st. I think we're back in that territory. If the AD doesn't act, Speri will do nothing but talk about how grateful he is to be in Cullowhee, and that's beginning to run a little thin as a reason to keep a coach.

I agree with you.....the facts look pitiful for our program. I too think the young and played hard and love being in Cullowhee is worn thin on many of us. ETSU is an example of where we could have been with the right people. At this point I look towards the top and head coach, not the assistants. I give up. You guys are right. We should fire everyone. The AD and all of the Assistant ADs, the Football Head Coach and all of the assistants. We should also go ahead and fire the Women's Head Basketball Coach, the Baseball Coach, and the Janitors that clean the Ramsey Center. You have convinced me, that the only way to be successful in Cullowhee in sports is to fire the Head Coach every 3 or 4 years and start over and there is no arguing with you because you guys are convinced that if only we could just get a new Head Football Coach that is the right person, we would win immediately. To get an experienced guy that has a winning record be prepared to pay about $300K to $400K per year. We will also have to pay our assistants much more to retain them and also, we will be behind the 8 ball for the next 3 years in recruiting because that will have to start all over. If we could afford $10 million a year, we could probably get Nick Saban to come from Alabama to coach The Cats and then we would win the National Championship every year. Your theory about this all being the head coaches fault and how we have hired the wrong people is proved out, because we hired John Wiley to be the DC and he has 3 National Championship Rings and 10 SoCon Championship Rings and in 2 years in Cullowhee he is now the worst DC on planet earth according to you guys. If only we had hired a DC with better credential. Obviously if we could rid ourselves of these coaches with National Championship credentials and hire better people, we would set the world on fire in Football. I will say it again and I am right about this. Hiring Coach Speir 7 years ago was the first step to restoring our Football Program that had been in shambles since Bob Water's death because of the way we treated that great man. Honestly, we got the Karma we deserved. Thank You Myron Coulter. Rome was not built in a day but we are on the right track. I don't care if you agree with me, but what you guys are proposing is the definition of insanity! With that said, let the insanity continue...

First throw the coaches under the bus and then throw the kids under the bus. Classy move. These are student/athletes representing your school. Do you think it is good idea to bad mouth the kids that play their hearts out for their school every week? Maybe you are not as good of a supporter of your school as you should be. Maybe you are the part of the problem or the entire problem. Your solution is to fire everyone and start over. Brilliant. Why have we not thought of that before?

FLcat, I think you should learn a new "song & dance" as that tune you keep repeating over and over is getting a little old.
