Here comes the doom and gloom. These boards are quiet as a mouse when we win and as soon as we lose a couple games everyone chimes in. It’s like Catamount fans thrive on misery and losing. I guess that’s part of our culture.
We got smacked in the mouth by a bigger, faster, and better team. It was never a game. It was disappointing because the RAC was rocking tonight and we probably won’t get that atmosphere back this year after that performance. There are no excuses for it, Dotson wouldn’t have mattered, the refs sucked but they had no bearing on the outcome.
We can’t beat ETSU, we won’t beat them in Johnson City and won’t beat them in the conference tournament. Our only hope is to finish on the 2/3 line in the bracket and avoid them with the hopes that someone else does. We don’t matchup with them. That being said, we took the 2nd best team to the wire at their place and the jury is still out on how we handle Wofford and UNCG. This can still be a great season.
If we have a similar outcome next Saturday against Wofford, then I’ll shut up and resign back to mediocrity.

And every time we built momentum they hit a big shot or we got a bad break. Wasn’t our night in any aspect. It was fun seeing the building that crowded and being able to stand the whole game for once. I really hope we can pack it again a few more times this season (and that people in the other 24 sections can get a little more excited 😁)

I feel like I can’t yell or react to anything. It’s the wine and cheese crowd.

Although tonight was disappointing, I’m still excited for the rest of the season. ETSU is good and their guards are silly quick. They shot the ball really well tonight....50% from the field to our 38%. They shot 45% from 3 point land. Their one guard, Tisdale, was 6 for 9 from beyond the arc. It seemed like we couldn’t get in a rhythm. I think we need better off the ball movement. Too much standing around the perimeter. There was too much one on one tonight. We only had 6 assists for the game. I do believe Carlos would have made a big difference as he would have helped to draw in the defense which would have opened up the perimeter.

For me, after the years we have had, if the Cats can just make one of the 4 postseason tournaments (I don't even care if its CIT or CBI), will be an improvement I will be happy this year. That's a high bar, as any team that's willing to pay the entry fee for the CIT or CBI can play in either of those tournaments. Yes and ... No seriously, WCU does not get the respect of the Major conferences or even some of the mid-majors. It does not matter if WCU had went undefeated in the regular season, made it all the way to SoCon tournament and lost in triple OT, they still would not have gotten an NCAA bid just because the NCAA will not give but the automatic qualifer an NCAA bid. We may be a top 4 or 5 team in basketball this year, but again we could still only lose 2 SoCon games (5 total for the year during the regular season) and still the same scenario. Think of Davidson back in the Stephen Curry days. If we somehow win the regular season and lose in the tournament at least we get an NIT bid but that too probably is not good enough for you. Chances are we will finish somewhere in the top 4 or 5. Chances are this team is going to finish above .500, and if they were in the SEC, ACC, AAC, Big East, etc, there is a good chance WCU would either get an at large in the NCAA or at least at minimum in the NIT. Unfortunately, WCU does not have that opportunity, so what is the shame in giving the students more play time and enjoy a tournament of somewhat regardless of whether its the CBI or CIT. Going somewhere is better then going nowhere. Maybe you would be ashamed but I bet if WCU went to either and hosted and especially if they were good enough to get deep. The Ramsey will be packed (maybe not sold out but packed). What is the shame in it for these kids and Prosser, especially for someone like Carlos Dotson? If they have the opportunity, the seniors deserve it? Heck maybe they could win the whole thing of either the CIT or CBI and so what if its not the NCAA tournament (or even the NIT) , I don't think its a shame to hang one of those banners in the Ramsey Center. Also, lots of mid-major schools will use that to propel themselves to be better the next year and achieve the bigger prize. I still hope we win the SoCon Tournament and get in the NCAA or at the least are good enough to get an NIT bid but chances of that happening unless we win the tournament or the regular season is not great even if we have 20 wins after the regular season and conference tournaments are finished. So now bar isn't low, but you would probably be against going to the NIT too (you probably consider it the Not Invited Tournament, that is only true for ACC like teams like those Tarholes). Also, not any team willing to pay gets in the CIT Tournament. They only allow quality mid-major programs that did not win their conference tourny or regular season title in the CIT. Drawback is no major programs are allowed so no playing ACC, AAC, Big East, SEC etc as you will be matched with CUSA, Horizon Leagues, Atlantic Sun etc teams but who cares. Also, teams only wanting to host have to pay for the games they host, if WCU is just happy playing on the road they do not have to pay. Although, I would hope they would request some host games. Now the CBI a little different, they do require a participation fee and the participation fee is even higher than the CIT host fee, and costs even more to host, but you will get the chance to play Major schools from the P5 conferences that are mediocre but hey, you might get a Wake Forest or Georgia Tech but yes they have been known to allow teams with losing records to play in the CBI. Oregon State once won it with a losing record and WCU has already been there once with a losing record. My choice would be the CIT but again, going somewhere is better then nowhere unless you don't care about our student athletes.

If you go back to the very first post on this subject, you’ll find I spelled out my concerns before the game was played. I never expected the Cats to Win for ETSU is the class of the Conference & WCU is not in their league. They recruit better than anyone in the SoCon. All you had to do was compare rosters, look at the size of players & the depth which I spelled out completely. I try to deal in reality & not deal in optimism or pessimism. The Cats will be a 5 or 6 seed team in the Conference Tourney if they don’t fall apart after these two defeats.

Old man (I only call you that because you called me young) I read where you said that we didn’t match up well with ETSU and you were right. I had what you said on that 35 minute drive over the mountain in the back of my mind hoping you were wrong but you were right. You’re probably right about our seed but I’ll hope for a 2 or 3. Call it dumb youthful enthusiasm if you want.

It is hard to compete when your players are midgets as compared to your competitors.
