Western baseball is in good hands and will be alright. We are not doomed as some would like you to believe. We have lost some games we should have won and had some good wins too. I am sure that the AD is evaluating the situation and will do what needs to be done but nothing will be done until the season is over. Like all athletic teams at Western, baseball is underfunded with sub-par facilities. There might be another coach out there that will come to Western and win with what we are willing to pay a baseball coach, the lowest recruiting budget in the SoCon and sub-par facilities. Also, there is a lot more competition for recruits than there was 15 -20 years ago. Many more mid-major teams have popped up with better facilities. I am no expert, but I would say that expecting 35-40 wins a year is not realistic unless some cash for facilities, salaries and the recruiting budget happens first. We have great tradition, but it takes more than that today.

I'd say the only area we are in a competive disavtanage in baseball is in facilities. The coaches salary is competive for the SoCon, the recruiting budget is competitivce for the SoCon, and baseball scholarships are fully funded. NC Promise also gives us an advantage in scholarship dollars for both instate and out of state tutition.
Coaches salary WCU - Moranda $113,652 UNCG - Godwin $118,900 UNCW - Hood $120,000 ASU - Smith $135,252
Oh yeah, I forgot. Another area we are in a competitive disavantage currently is in the coaching staff, which can be easily corrected by the AD.

Moranda and Sanderfur bleed Catamount purple—they’re the right guys for this program. Facilities are being improved and will take time. FLCATAMOUNT is correct in saying there is more recruiting competition nowadays. Players want fancy fields and fancy facilities. Give the new AD/Mo partnership a chance. To the haters (wcu72 and others): they almost won the championship last year after ALL 3 WEEKEND STARTERS WENT DOWN! And this year they’re trying to replace Robinson, Bigbie, Nanny, and Snyder, 2 of which are in the minors. Is Mo supposed to pull these guys out of his butt? (come to think of it, Mo has several examples of being the only recruiter of a young kid out of high school, only to see that kid getting drafted a few years later.) Nothing wrong with the occasional rebuilding year, and I hesitate to even call it that with about a third of the season left to go. I’ve listened to a few of you bash this team and calling for Moranda’s head on this forum for the last month or so now and I just couldn’t stay quiet any longer.

Guess what, no one bled purple more than Kent Briggs. But he got canned.
Bleeding purple is not in the job discription for baseball coaches. When was the last time WCU won the regular season? When was the last time WCU won the tournament? (Remember, close only counts in horse shoes and hand granades, you lose a game by one run or 25 runs, it's a loss in the book.) Finishing a season 26-19, then finishing the tournament in second place is hardly a great accompolishment.
Unfortunatley, every year since 2014 seems to be a rebuilding year in Cullowhee.

If bleeding purple isn’t enough, is being the winningest coach in program history enough for you? Briggs was 22 and 43 in his six years (I had to Google that). Hardly a comparison. I realize the 2014 regular season championship, as well as the 2016 tournament championship was a while ago, but it’s pretty clear that the previous administration spent more money on football than baseball over that period, and for what? The current A.D. is a former baseball player, which I think should be exciting for everyone involved.

AND..regarding last year. They were somewhere around 21-10 before their starters went down, so I would call 26-19, knocking off the #1 seed, and losing on a walkoff to a dominant Samford offense a great accomplishment.

Just think of the record Raleigh, LaClair, or Leggett would have had had they stayed in Cullowhee for 14 seasons. Moranda would have been gone early too, if someone else would have hired him, and he tried to get away from Cullowhee too Jack Leggett 1983–91 302–226 Keith LeClair 1992–97 229–135–2 Todd Raleigh 2000–07 257–209
