Scoring on its first three offensive possessions and aided by a defensive touchdown, Western Carolina's Purple squad jumped out to a big first-half lead and held on to defeat the White squad 41-22 in WCU's annual Spring Game held Saturday at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. WCU's annual Spring Game featured four quarters with a running clock in the second half except within the final five minutes of the fourth quarter. The two sides worked through 22 total drives. A combined 10 drives ended with points including eight touchdowns – seven on offense and one on a defensive takeaway – and two field goals with a third resulting in a long, missed field goal attempt before the break. Three drives were halted on fourth-down stops and four ended with punts with four total interceptions – three by the Purple team and one for the White squad – ending offensive possessions. Quarterback Cole Gonzales led the Purple squad, finishing 12-of-17 for 262 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception, splitting time with Brody Palhegyi who was 9-of-17 for 159 yards with a score. Gonzales added a 20-yard scamper on the ground among his final statistics. Six different receivers hauled in passes for the Purple team with freshman Corey Washington finishing with a team-best five catches for a total of 89 yards. Censere Lee picked up where he left off in the fall, posting a scrimmage-best 131 receiving yards on just three receptions with two going for touchdowns – strikes of 37 yards from Gonzales and 64 yards from Palhegyi. catamountsports.com/news/2023/4/15/football-purple-squad-claims-41-22-victory-in-annual-spring-game.aspx QB Cole Gonzales finished 12-for-17 for 262 yards with two touchdowns in Saturday's annual Spring Game.

This might be the most talent we have ever had. We have players that are above SoCon level and we have the 3 star QB from Miami that led the state of Fl in passing and the 4 star receiver from Fl that is coming in this summer. Also our best RBs did not even play in the Spring game and many other players who were starters last year did not play. I look for the QB from Miami to be the starter. I will be surprised if he is not. That kid is special and he is not coming to Western to be the backup. Also, that 4 star recruit from Fl was offered by just about every P5 program in the south including GA and Alabama. He is also not coming to ride the pine. If you recruit kids like that, they have to play or they will leave.
Based on talent, I don’t see a team in the SoCon that can beat us.

I like your attitude but we still have to play the games and not take anything for granted......Just ask UNC-CH in basketball this past season....

Just a question because I am curious. 04, why do your replies always come out on the top of the message you are replying to instead of at the bottom like everyone else’s replies? Not a big deal ,but it gets confusing sometimes because you are the only one doing that.

I have a strong suspicion that whether or not these young men start or not will have a lot to do with how well they learn and grasp Bell's offensive system then work to apply it in their play. So, if they end up in a back up role for more than a season people need to look at these reasons first.

If a kid does not play, he will leave. It is not like you can keep a 3 or 4 star kid on the bench at a school like Western. I am not saying how we as fans look at it. It does not matter how we look at it. The only thing that matters is how the kid looks at it. Why do you think a kid that has offers from bigger schools that is highly ranked is coming to Western? 99 times out of 100 that kid is thinking they are going to come in and play. If you are a highly touted freshman and you come in and there is a soph in front of you starting at QB, you are transferring after a year.

FLCATAMOUNT.....Just saying you thought Carlos Davis would be the starter this coming Fall and now he is gone......I have no clue who will be the starting QB except....evidently Carlos left because he knew it would not be him. I think we will see more than one QB this coming season and it's going to be interesting to watch. We have talent.

Cole Gonzales will be our starting QB (barring injury) to open next season. However, Bennett Judy is our future QB. From watching him in practice and hearing what the coaches are saying, he is impressive with a strong, accurate arm, lots of football savvy, intense and a quick learner. Everyone thinks he will be 6-4, 215 to 220 by the 2024 season. Not saying he is going to unseat Cole in the coming season, but we have a freshman QB with All-SoCon tools.
