There's not much left to say about Furman, however, if we don't do our job in the coming weeks, we'll have no chance at a share of the SoCon conference. We need help getting there, our best hope is Chattanooga beating the Paladins.
However, we've got to do our part, and beat Mercer. The Bears are 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the SoCon. Win over VMI,ETSU, and Wofford, while they have losses to Furman and Chattanooga. This is a must win game for Homecoming next Saturday

Agreed. Tough loss yesterday, but let's move on. Mercer is no slouch, and has had our number since entering the SoCon.
We've got to get healthy. Unfortunately, if that means holding guys out against Mercer, so be it. Try to look at the big picture. Since we already lost to the likely champion (or co-champ) of the league, we no longer control our own destiny for a SoCon championship. Now our focus needs to move towards making the playoffs, and having the "horses" to make a solid run deep into the playoffs.
We have to wait and see regarding a SoCon championship, but the focus now needs to move toward beating Mercer, getting healthy, and getting to 9-2 overall.
Go Cats!

This is a must win game for Homecoming next Saturday I agree, this not just a must win for a chance at being a SoCon Co-Champion but to me to ensure that our at-large playoff hopes are alive (which are very much alive and we get in if we finish 9-2) but lose to Mercer and that could put us on the outside looking in during the selection committee (I still think 8-3 gets us in but if there are too many 8-3s) we will be sweating on selection day.

9-2 record gets us 1 home playoff game (hopefully). SoCon Championship is out the window unless Furman loses to UTC. We must take care of Mercer this week and then win, but stay healthy against Wofford, ETSU and VMI and hope UTC wins out. Then wait for selection Sunday 11/19 for our spot in the playoffs!
GO CATS!!

I hope the team can have that "let's be 1-0 this week" mentatlity. We need to get healthy, and we need to be laser-focused on playing a team who has had our number with an embarassing beat-down last year and other wins in the past (1 that most definitely kept us out of the playoffs). As a team they need to simply forget about the Furman game and follow Coach Bell's comments about not looking right or left, but looking straight ahead. Nothing WCU can do but win their games, and they need to be locked-in for each and every one.

THIS GAME MATTERS!!
With our injuries this Mercer game has completely changed. AND they are playing to be TIED with us in the standings.
It would also be a "quality win" in the eyes of the selection committee.
We need a huge turnout by our fans this Saturday. If we lose this game, it's very possible we lose out on an at large bid to make the playoffs. We need to sell this game out to let the players know we've got their backs.
This is just as big as the Furman game. With Furman still having to play UTC in Chattanooga.
Mercer is virtually playing to take our playoff invite. The invitation goes to the winner. Let's GOOOO!!!

This game is now BIGGER than the Furman game was. We could always afford the loss to a top-5 team, but we do not want to be sitting around as an 8-3 team hoping for a playoff bid at the end. Mercer is more than capable, and they played a very physical game against the Paladins earlier this year that was much closer than the final score showed. The Bears made several mistakes that gave FU a lead, then clawed back to get it pretty close, then just got out-manned at the end. Some of that sounds eerily familiar to what WCU did.
Mercer will no doubt try to do what Furman did and make our offense one-dimensional. They also have a stout front-7 that we are going to need to try and run on. As a team, we need to keep those drives alive against MU that we simply did not against FU. I know we are all worried about Reid (even though he showed on a couple of plays he was still explosive even this past weekend), but we really need to be at full-strength on the O-line to get a push and make 1st downs.
I don't think the Bears have the balance running the football as Furman does, but they also have 2 very talented WRs who can cause trouble for anybody in the country. Make no bones about it - this is going to be a very tough football game.

I heard Reid might not be playing till the playoffs assuming we make it and don't fall asleep at the wheel . All the talk about how Adams could be a starter anywhere else is going to need to show starting this week. If Adams does not step up into that role we will be in trouble

I have absolutely no confidence in our pass defense & I’m sure Mercer will attack our secondary with fury. They will put the final nail in our coffin as far as the SoCon Championship & Playoffs are concerned.

We really do have to win this game to keep them behind us in the standings and in line for a playoff spot. I'm also afraid that a loss just might cost us a spot in the playoffs depending on what else happens. Our chances for a co-championship are pretty slim so we need to beat Mercer most importantly, and that may give us a little breathing room.. Maybe a SoCon championship was not meant to be but a playoff spot will really make for a special season. One that is needed badly after so many bad years
