I agree 2020. I went back and looked at the drive charts we had. In the 2 drives where we were more balanced, guess what - 2 TDs. In a 3rd drive where it wasn't simply all passing, guess what - we got to the 9 yard line and threw a forced INT at the 1 yard line. As bad as everything went, we could have been ahead 21-20 with 3 mins left in the 3rd quarter. Not scoring AND turning the ball over there was a huge momentum shift that could have been huge our way had we scored. All the coulda/shoulda/woulda is over with from the Furman game. We were the #1 rushing offense going into the Furman game and we ran it 24 times. We need to establish that we can and will run the ball much closer to 50/50 to keep Mercer's very good front-seven honest. That gives Cole more time, allows our very good WRs to get open, and makes everything better. If we abandon the run against Mercer we could see a replay of this past Saturday. If you know all these good things to do, why did the coaches not stick with was working?

Every one of WCU's offensive possessions went into Furman territory......we just couldnt capitalize on the field position. If we had converted those two shanked punts into points, WCU could have very well won that game. Hopefully, the Cats learn from the loss.
With Mercer, we've got to find a way to contain their very talented receiving corp......as others have mentioned. Mercer has had our number, and we've got to change that on Saturday. It's going to take a complete game on both sides of the ball to win.

Like many teams, we are heavy RPO and after watching the Coaches show it was apparent we called a lot of the same plays but FU simply put more guys in the box so Cole pulled many of those reads and threw passes. That is the kind of thing we need to adjust with for Mercer, as I expect them to try and use the same blueprint that Furman just did to force us to throw.
And I keep saying this, but Furman is a top-3 team. They make lots of teams look bad. Mercer is not as good as Furman - they are good, but not that good. We don't need to wholesale change who we are, we just need to block and execute better.
That being said, I also expect that the Bells will adjust with some more creativity. More than anything I'd like to see a healthy offensive line that looks more like what they did in the first 6 weeks. Furman had a lot to do with our offensive woes, but injuries didn't help.

It didn't help that FU was mimicking our snap count so Cole was getting the ball before he called for it

These boys better be ready to play Saturday. Mercer is a good team. I hope they don’t spoil our homecoming.
