I’ll ask why did we go for 2, chase points, in the first half??? Came up big at the end. They would’ve needed 2 two point conversions. They missed their first extra point and we were chasing points early? Let them chase points. That folks is on the Coaches. Im frustrated after watching our boys play their asses off, only to lose. Yeah FLACAT we may improve next year, would be great to see, but my kid will be gone.

I think there might be one thing that we all can agree on. In the past two weeks we have seen Adams do everything he possibly can to try and will a team to win. We have one of the top 10 offenses in the country but our defense is 107th in the country. We have no problem scoring points. We will set the school record this fairly easily. But this defense. WE should have won this game. We give up 40 points a game. The worst in the history of the school. It's past time to part ways with certain members of the staff. This is embarrassing. This is killing recruiting, and the fan base and alumni are tired of it. A team that scores 46 and 43 points in back to back weeks shouldn't lose those games. The offense plays well enough to win but the defense couldn't stop a Pop Warner team. This was a defensive and Special Teams choke of epic proportions yesterday. And could somebody pay someone to PRESSURE WASH the stands!

What I hope is that one day we can hire someone with previous head coaching experience which Mark Speir did not have.
Would like to see us get someone like Kerwin Bell the head coach @ Valdosta State - has been a winner everywhere he has coached.
Not sure you have a clue Stinky, all you are viewing are outputs. Have you asked about inputs to this program? Until THIS YEAR Speir had roughly 50% of the recruiting budget as others in SoCon. Until THIS YEAR Speir had roughly 75% the available scholarships of other in SoCon. Of course, don't let something like the FACTS get in your way of simple mindedness! Very informative webinar last week we're all of this was laid out. No excuses, but FACTS! If you don't do you homework your views will continue to be "Stinky". Out.

Pure and simple, we lost this game because we couldn't convert an extra point distance FG (27 yds) in 1st overtime. Make it and all's fine & ready for Citadel. Exactly! In every game there are going to be mistakes by players and coaches. I can guarantee you this - as much as we all are hurting and frustrated - we come no where close to what the players and coaches are feeling. But what do we do - badmouthing everything. I have said it before and I will say it again - Coach Speir is the right man for us. Stand by these young men and fill Whitmire the next two Saturdays! Skip You are exactly right. Coach Speir is the right man for Western. The university just needs to do their job and give him more financial resources to work with.

Facts don't matter to the negative folks because they are upset because they love the CATS. We need to look at root cause and the root cause is funding from the university. The Catamount Club continues to step up but the BOT and the administration continues to cut funding and not do their job. Facts are a funny thing. They do not change based on emotions. We have coaches that have been successful at every other stop. Ask yourself what is different? It is funding and real support and not just lip service from the folks in charge. The BOT should be ashamed to say they are part of the BOT. They do not care about athletics and certainly do not understand what a winning football team could do for Western.

Speir couldn't win with Furman's athletic budget. He's a good man, but not a good head coach. The DC should be shown the door at the end of the season, along with the entire defensive and special teams staff. Of course the best option would be to show Speri the door as well, but I know that won't happen, the university and Catamount fans have not suffered enough with their inept coaching for someone to fire him.

I posed this question on AGS but haven't seen any responses. Has any SoCon player ever won conference player of the week honors in back-to-back weeks when their team lost both games? Tyrie's stats warrant him being SoCon offensive player of the week again, but not sure the league office will give it to him.
If he became the first, I suspect he would trade both awards in for wins these past 2 games - something the Cats should have been able to do. This is a team that could easily be 5-3, and I sure would love to have the defensive effort and the UTC game back with a fully-healthy Tyrie Adams. Heck, we ***coulda*** beat Mercer and Furman with no KO returns for TDs, not fumbling inside the 10, etc. And obviously we should have won this game. But in the end we don't get do-overs and the plays as they happened all count. We just aren't good enough (or adapt enough) yo overcome those setbacks.
Yesterday we went ultra-conservative on offense and defense the last 2 series of each and let a 15-point lead evaporate. Easy to armchair QB it, but we should have gone for the last 4th down play on offense in regulation because they were going to score with the ball back and we would have either iced the game or given ourselves more time after they scored.
And OT - what can you say? D gets their 3rd pick of the game, O moves down and positions ball for the FG, and he just plain out misses it. I feel awful for the players, but particularly for Horton.
As for the coaches, I believe we might have seen the ceiling of what we will get with this staff and 7 wins, and from here on out we might be a roughly .500 team (winning season or 2, losing season or 2). I would agree with some shakeup in the staff (or at minimum some philosophical changes), because we need better to overcome how far behind we are due to budgets, but for that same reason I want to seriously ask you guys what kind of coaches do you think we will attract with the pay, facilities, budgets, etc. that we offer? So grand scheme of things even at long-term .500 ball we are better than we have been in a long time. But that is not really where we want to be.
In my wait until next year voice I think we will have a bunch of dudes on the pre-season list of accolades, but we'll be breaking in 4 new O-line starters and that will be a big factor in our success (or non-success).

Each of the three winning seasons under this head coach and staff has been 7-5. That is not at all what I call great seasons (or maybe given our history the last several decades some might think it is) I'm afraid that is the best we will ever do unless a couple things happen. The administration has to wake up and put finances and effort behind the football program as well as other sports. With better financial support we should be able to hire and keep capable coaches and with better facilities, attract better athletes. I have reluctantly come to think that a shake up the coaching staff might be needed, since they apparently are sitting back all fat dumb and happy collecting their checks. I don't doubt that the kids are trying hard as shown the last couple weeks, but fixable problems are not being fixed by this staff and that falls directly on the coaches and head coach. If the head coach can't or won't take the necessary steps then maybe it is time for a change there. I hope we can somehow turn things around these last few games but I am honestly doubtful that will happen. I would add that also applies to the AD if he doesn't hold his staff accountable and get some improved results.

Flcatamount, yes I have played football. Your optimism totally destroys your ability to deal with reality. Let me explain something to you. Statistically WCU defense is one of the worst in FCS Football. What do you not understand about that fact. The offense has a lot of weapons but the OC is not up to the task of play calling when the game is on the line. The Coaching Staff was hired on the cheap & why any of us would expect more than what we are getting from this crowd is a mystery to me. We have a performance history on this HC, his Staff and for the 7 years have not been overall positive. This program is a little better than what we had in the two previous coaches. However, during their time, the program was terrible. For your info, the program is still terrible. Flcatamount, you need a reality check. Giving up 45 points is not a good defensive performance by any stretch of anybody’s imagination. Sometimes I wonder if you & I are watching the same game based on your comments. You have the right to express your opinion but sometimes I think you are living in a fantasy world when it comes to WCU & Coach Speir. I once had the same attitude as you but I changed considerably when Bob Waters died. We are getting better and this team is getting close. I don't believe that any of our coaches should or will get fired. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Coach Wiley is a winner and has won everywhere he has gone. We have some good athletes. I don't know how you can fault the OC. We are scoring enough points to win in just about every game. The problem is the young defense. The problem is not a young defense. It is how Coach Speir has recruited for the past 7 years. He has loaded up on the Offensive Side of the ball & not recruited well on the defensive side of the ball. Western may turn out to be the number 1 offensive team in the SoCon but will finish last or next to last in the SoCon Standings. Remember, Offense sells tickets & defense wins Championships. In the NFL, the team with the best Defense usually wins the Super Bowl. Lack of Recruiting & Depth on the Defensive Side of the ball is directly linked to Coach Speir. He is using the same template that App State used 10 years ago & it is not working. Tyrie Adams is an outstanding player & he is exciting to watch. However, I don’t give a da$$ about his haughty stats when the Cats are not winning games. ETSU was a winnable game & the Coaches blew it. My friend, this is reality to me. I see what it is & not what I mentally want it to be. If you expect more out of WCU’s Football Program than what we are now getting, you are living in a fantasy world. One last comment, WCU was the best offensive team in the SoCon last season & finished 4th in the SoCon Standings because of a sorry defense. Just like Smack said in one of his posts, Coach Speir is a great guy but he is not a good HC. I have said the same thing during the past 4 years.
