They won the tire at Bristol (along with their first SoCon win), now they won the rock, playing football for only 4 seasons. How long has Speir been in Cullowhee, seven seasons?
That should tell someone something if you think about it really hard.

To Recent Grad If you continue in this line of insults, not only will you be censored, you will be banned (your IP address). I will also return the board to members only posting. If you want to screw everybody, just continue with your insults. Most folks on this board know who Jim is, so he states his opinions out in public, but I see you like to do your insulting behind a screen name, as a "guest". People on this board can express their opinions, good or bad about the quality of the coaching staff. They shouldn't have to worry about being insulted for their opinions. You've also provided little of, in your own term "FACTS" to back up what you say, so let's quit with the bolster. -Jerry Recent Grad mentioned that Coach Speir only had 75% of the Scholarships that other teams in the SoCon provided for recruits. That meant that WCU was only giving about 47 total scholarships. I don’t believe that for a minute. He also mentioned the recruiting budget. I think the recruiting budget is around 90,000 or so dollars. I think just about everybody on here has come to the conclusion that WCU’s Administration is a joke when it comes to funding the Football Program. Civility on this board means that everybody has a right to freely express their opinions & to respect those opinions that you disagree with them. I have posted on this board for several years & I have come to the conclusion that a number of people have a hard time separating Coach Speir’s personality from his performance. I think one of the best posts on this Board was made by Hampton a few days ago. He stated he started watching the Coaching more during the games & he realized that we have some Coaching issues. Keep in mind that he was a good supporter of Coach Speir & his Staff. I also think he mentioned that Coach Speir should not be a HC. I to want to apologize to you for saying some things in conversations I made with you last year. I should have never said them. You have been nothing but fair to me & all Board Members from day one. You have kept us straight, encouraged us to post opinions, and defended us when we have been unjustly attacked by others. I do think maybe you need to go to a Members Only Board. I think the comments on this Board is justified but I also think the comments can impact future recruits. Shielding these comments makes a lot of sense to me. I sure would hate to think our comments would hurt the recruiting process. Actually, our recruiting budget has recently been increased to north of $120,000 which puts WCU on par with the top recruiting budgets in the conference. Our AD had to fight for those dollars and renegotiate the contract with the white house. Hopefully, the increased budget for recruiting will pay dividends.

I agree that money is an issue. But we have not done a good job of using the money we have. Our recruiting sucks. We seem happy just to sign 20-25 guys each year. The fact that some are 2nd team all-county from some out of the way county does not seem to matter. Do not believe all the hype you read when we sign a kid. Of course the best will be done to make the young fellow look like a star. But check out what other schools are after him. That speaks volumes. I can state as a hard fact from many years of HS coaching that our environment of losing and our location so deep in the mountains is a MAJOR factor. Mid-level recruits do not even consider us. Not many kids want to be a part of "rebuilding" a program such as ours. I hate to say it but we are going to have to take some other route. We need to hit the JC's hard. Take some transfers. We need a shot of energy. We do not have the time to try and fix this dumpster fire with HS recruits and coaches that have little or no experience. 74, I agree with you for the most part. However, I vividly remember how remote Clemson was when I use to play against them in the 1960s. A couple of beer joints, a grocery store, and a movie theater. The area around App State was very small but the Town and the adjacent area have grown with the increased enrollment at App State. Like one App State Grad told me, build it and they will come. You are right about the perception of the Football Program with people outside of Cullowhee & recruits. The remoteness of Clemson & App State have not been a deterrent to their Programs over the years. Winning Football Games would take care of a lot of your concerns.

they should hang this up in the locker room for motivation for next years game and plus so they can see what they pissed away in the 4th They won the tire at Bristol (along with their first SoCon win), now they won the rock, playing football for only 4 seasons. Thanks Jim64. Our recruiting budget was a battle to get though, which brings me back to the point I keep trying to make. The Admin doesn't care about athletics at WCU. Changes have to take place at the top. You don't hear about other AD's and Coaches fighting as much with their admin to get their fair share of recruiting and operational funds as you do at WCU. Something HAS to change and it ain't necessarily the coaches and AD. I'm telling you folks, right now our issue is the admin and white house and BOT. Fix that, then if the losses keep coming, then we can clamor for pinks slips for the coaches. Our coaching staff is fighting an uphill battle each year. All the levers that can be pulled to get the most out of what we can are being pulled. Each year, the AD and coaches are chipping away at the budgetary issues trying to get us on par with the rest of the conference and they've made great strides. Calling the X's and O's, yes we can complain about game time decisions and us losing leads in the 4th quarter or our defense giving up big plays. However, I see this as short-term issues that can be fixed and CAN get better. Our big battle is changing the mindset up at the top. Now, from what I've been hearing, now that enrollment has been increasing at the level admin set goals for and now that major capital improvements have been secured, some are more willing to sit down and set up a long-term vision for the improvement of our athletics as far as wins and championships and facility upgrades. However, a major set back (contrary to some that want to believe Belcher had zero interest in athletics) was the passing of Dr. Belcher and us having to start all over again with a new Chancellor search. Tons of decisions have been put on hold, compound that with UNC and BOT bungling of the search, and now we are delayed even further. NO, and I mean NO major asks or decisions will be made by the interim chancellor. I got this straight from the "near" top on the inside. It is what it is for right now. Call it a curse, call it a tragedy of errors (or comedy of errors) but we are in a MAJOR holding pattern for a year and counting whilst the staff on hand are pulling every lever they can to increase the budgets and get on par with the SOCON.

Thank you very much for the insight & information. This is the type of information that I’m most interested in. You are quite welcome and I'll continue to post a much information as I possibly can when I uncover new bits of information that others may not be aware of. I'll do so when I can so that we all can focus our efforts and voice our concerns in the right areas to the right folks. The last thing we want to do is have this wave of enthusiasm for change gather all for naught because we didn't direct the concerns to the right folks. Yes, we need to still demand the very best out of our AD and coaches and voice our concerns with them in the proper mode and in the proper tone. This should be a given and anyone who can't handle reading others post about coaching changes and mistakes made by coaches, should just remember what our forum administrator said and how these folks are paid to do what they do and are fair game until personally defaming insults are directed at them. Do I always agree with some of the Monday morning quarterbacking and criticisms? Nope, but I WILL TRY TO NEVER personally attack someones view. Instead, I'll try to conduct my own personal quest for facts, reasons, causes, and answers such as I've done over the past two weeks. Then, I will try to respectfully convey the situations as I understand them and as they were conveyed to me by those way more "in the know" than myself. With that said, alums and donors need to be HIGHLY suspect and HIGHLY critical of the folks in the white house, trustees, and board of visitors, etc. They are the ones that need to be held to a NEW, and HIGHER standard with regards to athletics. Otherwise, we'll be looking at another era similar to that since 1988. The "buck should stop here" right NOW. If we get a new Chancellor that give little or no regard to developing athletics to a consistently competitive level, then we've lost a MAJOR battle if not the entire "war". Vision starts AT THE TOP and the execution follows down the line.
