Lots of interesting points in all of this, and most of them are very valid. I have no idea if he interviewed for some position or not, and as others have said I would not blame him if he did. A coordinator position even at a Group of 5 school probably pays more than what WCU pays our head coach, and isn't his son going to be a Senior this coming season? For the record, the all-in pay for Satterfield according to the USA Today article that lists coaches total salary had him at $712,500 last year. What Jim posted should be looked at. I agree that the current state of financial support could also play into a coach (Head coach down through position coach) looking at other opportunities. And there lies the rub. Lots of talk now for the past month or two about changes that are needed, but just exactly who do you guys think we would get for coordinator roles or as our head coach? If we are lucky, we catch a guy on the rise like Mike Houston was and we lose him in 1 or 2 seasons. Or we get a "seasoned" guy who is at the end of his career and just wants to cash some checks. A Geoff Collins or Matt Rhule (or even Lonnie Galloway) isn't coming our way anytime soon (and not for $100k as a coordinator or $215k as the head man to go along with the lowest athletic budget in the SoCon). I remember actual comments (back before message boards were popular) about how we might have been OK if we would have stuck it out with coaches like Hodgin or Bleil for the long-term. I see Speir very much like I saw Hodgin who was the coach while I was there - eerily similar records, talented teams, very close to the playoffs a couple of times, etc. I totally get the "7 years is enough" crowd, but I also get the "we need to stick with somebody rather than start over every 4 or 5 years" crowd as well. So my question for the "get rid of Speir" argument is who do you replace him with? Since it is the Christmas season, create your wish list. But try to be realistic (a guy like Cronic who was the FU offensive coordinator and is now the LR coach is a realistic option - Paul Johnson or any of the above guys I mentioned are not). Keep in mind that ETSU got Randy Sanders for around 225,000 & he has a really good resume. Spent time at UT, Kentucky, & Florida State. In one year they go from a bottom tier team to tie for the SoCon Championship. You can count the number of coaches that have done that on one hand though. I fully expect 2 or 3 losing seasons with a change of guard.

Plus the offense.......... I don't want that offense. It would take him 3 or 4 years to get the players to run the triple option. Very unexciting.

Paul Johnson retired, not just leaving GT. But ya’ll speak as if he’d be worse than what we have, dude’s fifth winningest of active coaches.

Lots of people hate the option, but most of the teams that run it are pretty successful. Not that it matters, as Paul Johnson wouldn't be coming to Cullowhee even if we had an opening (which we don't). His "spread" option has evolved from the old wishbone type of attack, and is the basis for most of the RPO offenses we see all over the country. Johnson also showed a willingness to throw the football in some seasons where he had a capable QB and WRs. But yeah - who would want to be like GT and have 9 bowl games in the past 11 seasons. Or be like Wofford and win 8+ games every year and make the playoffs :-)
But back to the question - why are we talking about Paul Johnson? I posed a question about realistically who would people want/think we could get if we were to get a new head coach, and Johnson and Sanders (neither of which would be in the running for the job in Cullowhee whenever we have an opening) are the only two names that have come up.

Here ill give you some names IF the job was open....
David Dean- West GA Coach Kerwin Bell- Valdosta State John Holt- on staff Lee Shaw- alum Rabun County HS Coach
Mark is a good man and I’m thankful for all he and the whole staff at Western treated my son. Winning is the name of the game in football, I’m a UGA season ticket holder, we canned a Good Man that had a decent record a few years back. It worked out pretty good.

Respect your opinion, but replacing Mark Richt with Kirby Smart at a school like UGA is totally different than replacing Mark Speir with Coach X at WCU for obvious reasons. UGA has always gotten 4 and 5 star players so the worst coach in America could probably win at least half of their games with the talent that UGA has. Western has to develop talent. We get kids that may be a step slower or not quite as tall and have to coach them up. It really is not the same thing as what happens at a School like Alabama or Georgia. I would argue that those coaches at the bigger schools do not have to do as much coaching and making kids better like a coach does at a school like Western. 85 percent of winning in college is recruiting and resources and Georgia has plenty of both.
