I agree where someone commented that our starting QB for next year is probably not on the roster at the moment. I also disagree that Carlos is the answer if we want to win 8 or 9 games. He makes TOO many mistakes! He throws TOO many interceptions. He doesn't keep his cool! Keep in mind he is basically a senior, so these are not mistakes that maturity will correct. Cole is much cooler headed....period! If he makes a mistake he gets over it.

There Goes Cornett as we all Expected. Do we see Carlos Davis on this list next? He was never given a chance by Cade Bell. I have no clue why he was treated like trash by the Bells. His attributes have been well said by Flacat & I agree with him. If I was one of the QBs not playing, I would leave the Catamounts in a New York minute. I also would look very carefully at signing a scholarship to play for the Catamounts if I was a QB. It seems the Bells load up with Wide Receivers & QBs when they should be building depth on the Defensive side of the ball. Western will never win the SoCon if they do not put a sound defense on the field. This season was a perfect example of this. Ranked high in offensive production in the SoCon with one of the weakest defenses in the SoCon. You don’t have to be a Football Expert to figure this out. Was he treated "like trash" or was he not played? Those are two different things. Seems to me at the end of the day it's the coach's prerogative who he plays. And I know these kids are disappointed, but they leave with a lot of coaching by some pretty good offensive coaches. Hopefully they can put the skills they've refined to work yet.

Treated like trash? Hmm, this isn't recreation league sports or pee wee football where the expectation is all should participate or get even play time. What is your definition of getting treated like trash? Coaches get paid to make the decisions on who starts and who plays. Is your only measuring stick that Cornett was treated like "trash" the fact he didn't get to play? Do you have inside information that he was personally attacked, abused, or mistreated in any other way other than not getting playing time? Maybe you do, and I'm asking in a serious fashion because you post a ton of good info and have good insights a lot of the time.
Moving on from player treatment, about how many QB's, on average, would be on the roster of a D1 college football team? Two, three, maybe four or five? From what I see, it seems like at least four and sometimes I see five or even six. How many QB's do you think WCU should have available to play, only two? That seems a bit risky. The logic you lay out above to any potential recruit that may read this is DO NOT think about coming to WCU because we already have two QB's. It seems like any of these recruits would face the same situation at any other school. They'd just have to get in line behind other QB's on the roster and work their way into the system, however that may look.
Not too long ago, Ohio State won a national title using either their 4th or 5th string QB. Riley Skinner was deep on the QB roster at Wake the summer before they won the ACC championship, the season rested on his shoulders in 2006. Point being, I bet the team, fans and coaches sure were glad they had more than two go to guys at QB those seasons.
I realize the transfer portal has moved the paradigm for many thought processes of players and coaches and because of this, things will never be the same. On the flip side, I don't think WCU is the only school that has a coaching staff who has chosen their key player two-deep roster. That's what they get paid to do. It doesn't mean that we or any other school should not deepen the bench for when situations arise where it comes down to "next man up".
With all that said, I do agree we need to shore up recruiting both offensive and defensive lines and shore up depth on defense all over the field. Not taking away from that observation at all and I think most would agree. It's a tough balance for teams like WCU. Coaches need the depth wherever they can get it. I've watched WCU football long enough to see our team get into bad player shortage situations at nearly every position over the years. I've seen where we have all the right players in place and depth in place at O line and D line, but are down to our last healthy QB and I've also seen us QB "rich" but real thin along the line and at other positions. I really do think our coaching staffs (both current and previous) simply end up with the roster they have because they have to weigh who they've offered, who commits at the end of the day, and who backs out last minute, then BOOM, you got what you got.

Most of us predicted this would happen. With the portal today, if kids don’t think they have a fair shot at playing, they are going to leave. Before the portal, kids had to think twice about transferring because they had to sit out a year. Now a days, the power has shifted from the coaches / school to the student/athlete. I think the power should be with the student athlete. If a freshman Player with little or no film transfers, he is more likely to get picked up by another team because he is only one year out of HS. If he waits another year, he will be forgotten. Cornett had the chance out of HS to walk on to a P5 school but he chose to come to Western to compete for the job. He was beaten out by a better player per who the coaches decided was the best option. Cornett could possibly land at a G5 or another FCS school and get to play by transferring now. He just did not fit what the Bells were looking for. They wanted a gamer.

You do realize that defense won the game Saturday. Damn this is only their second year. The defense made improvements, I think Kerwin is a better judge of QB's than you are. Some of y'all just are not happy unless you are complaining. And we have a 3 star QB currently committed. Again I'll take Coach Bell's opinion on QB's. Good Lord!

Wow. That did not take long. Good for him. Union (KY) is an NAIA school that went 0-10 this year. I'm sure he can do better than that.

I hate that we are losing good talent to the portal. However, the coaches keep or lose their jobs on how the team performs overall. We need more than 2 solid QB's at any given time. And several of those guys know they have little chance of getting to the top. Another example of unregarded backups who have done well is Stetson Bennett who was 3rd or 4th and got to the top of the list early in the season. Who knows how many games Carlos will play next year? And what happens if Cole gets hurt? I like the fact that the coaches are able to keep the stable of recruits. If we know we have a senior, sophomore, and one other QB current, we have the flexibility to recruit for the future. And I totally agree about shoring up places where we have least depth (both lines in particular).
