Furman is talking a lot of smack. Bulletin board material! ...and I'm sure fubear is leading the way.

Furman - Light weight, living off last years reputation, just like W&M.
They beat Tenn Tech, who is 2-4 (Tech beat KSU and SC State) They beat Kennesaw State by 3 points, who is 1-5 (only win is against D2 team) They beat Mercer, who is 4-3 (wins are North Alabama, Morehead State, VMI, & ETSU) They beat The Citadel by 14 points, who is 0-7 They beat Samford by 6 points (Samford is 3-4 - wins are Shorter, ETSU, Wofford)
Sorry, they've played no body, and beat only bottom feeders. They keep winning against these teams and the poll voters kept moving them up, with no regard to who they were playing and who their wins are against.

My prediction for the next three games for the Paladins:
They lose big to WCU, then go home the next week and beat ETSU, then travel to Chattanooga the following week, and the Mocs finish them off, along with their at-large bid chances.
Next 3 games for the Paladins, FU goes 1-2 over that stretch, take it to the bank.

I think this is going to be a close one. Furman is balanced on offense and defense. If we want to win this game our defense will have to get their offense off the field fast. Our offense should do its thing and put up points. Hopefully Reid is at 100%. I think we will have to hold them to 21 points, and our linebackers will have to play well in order for us to have a chance. I think it’s obvious that Furmans record is a bit questionable, but they are our biggest threat. This is a culture defining, title contention game. I have faith the Cats will do well, I hope it’s enough for the win!

Best case for us, barring we don’t drop a game to ETSU or Mercer.

The other thing that has affected our play this year is the personal foul and dead ball foul penalties. It will get chippy and I am sure emotions will be high. Our coaches need to tell our players that they cannot react to whatever Furman does and keep their cool for the good of the team. We should do our talking with our play on the field. This will be the toughest FCS game of the year and we need to be at our best and keep our cool and play disciplined.

I watched the Samford Furman game, and I was impressed with their qb, as he is a very good runner and he passes ok. Roberto, their huge runner is good and hard to bring down.
Keys to Western winning Saturday:
#1: We get back our injured players like Reid, Simmons, Robinson, and others and that they are at 90 to 100% ready to play physically.
#2: The officials allow the teams to play, and we don't get calls for silly mistakes like roughing the passer calls against us.
#3: Stop the qb running and force him to pass.
#4: We have an overflow crowd that will be loud and proud and help the team win this VERY IMPORTANT game.
My prediction: Furman 28
Western Carolina 38
GO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could not watch the Furman-Samford game on Saturday. I watched the game on replay and what I saw was a game where Samford had to play against Furman and the referees. There were a lot of missed calls that should have been called against Furman and several calls against Samford that were questionable at best especially when the game was on the line. I also noticed that Stamford's offensive line is not as good as our Oline. Furman got a lot of sacks once Samford became one dimensional and had to pass. Furman has a good Oline and we will need to get after them on defense. Our offense should be able to move the ball on them and score but our defense will have to step up and stop them. They will score and move the ball, but I did not see a dominating performance by Furman on either side of the ball against an unranked Samford team. The game against Samford could have gone either way.

I also noticed that Hiers held the ball too long on at least a few of the sacks - he typically is good at either getting rid of it fast, or in throwing it away. To me it did not look like he was anywhere close to 100% healthy.
All that being said, no doubt he was under pressure a lot. Hier's typical play would have meant maybe 5 or 6 sacks instead of 9 (we also sacked him 6 times). But there were other times when he had all day to pass. The Samford line's first step has always typically been backwards as an air-raid team - even on running plays they didn't try to get any real push. If you you don't make FU worry about the run, that display is what they are going to do to teams. Even with all of that, Samford had the ball with a chance to win on their last drive.
And luckily we have an O-line who has been playing lights-out, and we have RBs who can make you pay if you either miss them or we give them a crease. And of course we saw again multiple times where the Paladin secondary got beat on deep throws. I expect lots of Reid and Adams running the football to draw FU up, then lots of deep throws to Lee and White, but also using Columbo, Cal, and AJ in seam routes and in those 15 yard open spaces that can be created with LBs pulled up and DBs covering deep.
I also saw multiple times where reverses took advantage of Furman's penchant to over-pursue - something I am sure Kade Bell took note of. Not sure we will do reverses since FU will probably emphasize that, but some mis-direction and plays going back across the defense (and designed bootlegs) will be something to look for.

I hope our coaches noticed that the (not so squeaky clean Furmanites) will try to cheat if not watched. In the Samford game they were flagged at least once for clapping on defense to try to get Samford to jump. Who knows how many times they did that. They try to slow down a speed up , fast offense with fake injuries. I saw some of this in the Samford game. All that comes from dirty coaching.
