Yaks, another loss, this time against Mercer.
The Basics
Score: Mercer 72, Western Carolina 50
Records: Western Carolina 3-17, 0-6 SoCon, Mercer 18-2, 5-0 SoCon
A 22 point loss should embarrass someone at WCU. Obviously not the AD.

Before last year, I would have said don't worry about it because once the women's coach's contract comes up, she will be gone. Now after what happened with Coach Hunter last year and his extension, I believe that she will get an extension. She is obviously not the right coach for Western and we need our Athletic Director to do his job and get rid of her, but sadly, he will not because the administration just does not care so they accept sub par performances.

You may be right. But I still think it’s too early to tell about McCormick. It’s already been said: going on 10 years of WBB futility. It’s was bad before she got here. Really bad. So she may not be the right fit, and ordinarily I’d say by Year 3 there should be a good indication. But in this instance, with everything that has gone on (almost entirely by players she didn’t recruit), I would say it’s still too early to tell.
wcatradio - if you’re saying “more than one bright spot” as in more than one each game, then I am with you. Because the biggest problem I see is inconsistency. One game its Bonner going for 18, the next it’s Allen going for 21 and Bonner is quiet. Or Ruiz gets 17, but no one else shows out. And then Ruiz plays poorly the next three games. Round and round they go.
The seniors (recruited by previous staff, and coached by them for one season) have proven they’re not it, and the rest of the team is young. The losses of Farrington and Hough obviously weren’t anticipated, so the youngsters weren’t expected to be relied upon as early as they are. You know what they say about Rome.
Call me overly optimistic, but I just don’t think it’s time yet to pass final judgment on McCormick. She’s a first-time HC, too. Make all the preliminary judgments and observations you want; every coach knows that comes with the territory. In WCU’s case, there are some serious inherent challenges we all know about. So given what she came into, I’d still give her some time to show progress before passing final judgment.

Is it year 3, 4, 5 when we will know?

Another conference game today, another loss. I'd say the Cats will have that perfect season of all losses in conference play. This is basketball that can make alumni proud, cause they just don't care.

This is basketball that can make alumni proud, cause they just don't care. Same old thing in Cullowhee. It is the past administrations fault including the current one. Until alumni get tired of this BS in every sport and cut off the funds, this will continue. I don't just mean athletic funding. If the alumni finally quit participating in funding mediocrity in all areas athletic and academic will they pay attention. Cut off the funds and they will come crawling and say what do we want. As long as the Catamount club continues to fund this mediocrity there will be no change in Cullowhee.

I liken the WBB situation to the football situation we had after "he who shall not be named", a bare cupboard and limited recruiting. Our previous coach, as nice as a person as she was, wasn't all that great as a coach or recruiter. So, here we sit with a HC who's in her second season slowly working on rebuilding an entire program and recruiting base. I said it when she was hired and I'll say it again, it's going to take a huge amount of hard work and a good while to turn this disaster around.

I don't think the women's program was in as bad a shape as the football team. The last coach (Middleton) went to the University Wisconsin-La Crosse (a DIII team) that was 7-18 the year before she arrived (2015-16), and 11-14 the prior year, 10-15 the prior year, and 11-14 the year prior to that. So, she didn't go to a school with a history of winning. In her first season, her team went 16-11 (last season) and is 12-7 this year. Numbers we would love in Cullowhee. Of course, I realize this is DIII ball, but her teams are competing against equal competition, so I'd say she's a keeper for the Eagles.

Another game, and of course another loss. This time against Chattanooga (that loss was a given, based on past history with Chattanooga). Cats are 0-8, with only 6 more tries to pick up a regular season conference win.

Another Saturday night, another loss by the women's team, this time to ETSU by 20 points, 76-46. How long can this suffering go on?
