FL, I hear you. I think can all agree on the hope for greater support of athletics from WCU admin. But until they do...
What’s the realistic expectation for each sports program? Where do we rank in terms of overall budget in the SoCon?
For the sake of argument, let’s say WCU’s overall athletics budget is 7th out of 10 schools. Divvied up among the team’s, it probably means each team is 7th among its peers. Doesn’t that make the expectations of consistently finishing 4th or better on the field/court unrealistic?
Show me where I’m wrong here. I don’t see it.

You are spot on and I agree. Many of our coaches have actually overachieved. The big lie that is told by the administration is that we are at the bottom in giving of private funds which is not actually true. We are around 4th in giving but Western's is near the bottom of the conference in subsidizing athletics by percentage of total giving and totaled dollars given to subsidize the athletic department. So not only does the administration not pony up what a UNCG , ETSU or UTC does, they also spin the truth and blame it on the Catamount club for NOT contributing enough and ask for more funding each year from alumni and friends. I have seen the numbers several times and there have been articles published in the ACT and other newspapers that show these facts. I am not talking about student fees either. The administration will not even float a bond to pay for very needed upgrades to the athletic facilities as most every other school in NC does. They says, we have to raise the money privately and then blame the alumni for not giving enough. It is not the Catamount Clubs fault. We continue to outpace what the administration does and they continue to ask for more. As an example, last year Western asked the state for $24 million dollars in bonds to build a new parking garage which was granted and that money would have built a very nice indoor practice facility. Instead Randy says we will raise the money privately for athletic improvements. Where are the earth movers and the ground breaking and the new indoor practice facility. I tell you where. It will never be built because that is a lie and everyone knows that we cannot raise that much money, but this way, Randy and the administration can sray that it is the alumni's fault for not giving enough donations when they are not doing their part. As an example of commitment, when Appalachian State wanted to move up to FBS because they get it, they asked the state for NC to float a bond for $35 million to improve their facilities and it was granted. It is all about priorities and lying to the alumni base about those priorities. They need to step up and be men and say what is the truth but they will not. I have followed Catamount Athletics for 40 years. Come back in 5 or 10 years and the leadership will still be promising this and that and nothing will have changed.

That certainly paints a disappointing picture. I understand better now.
