like we are the only team to have those type of players. i hate excuses The coaches have had 2 weeks to prepare for Chatt. If we get embarrassed, the coaches have no one to blame but themselves They always blame the "young, inexperienced players". For eight years, WCU has had only "young, inexperienced players".

My Granddaddy used to say, "People who are good at making excuses are seldom good at anything else."

The two are not mutually exclusive. Our FB talent appears to be at least more competitive at that level of player. I realize its a step back but sometimes you just have to admit defeat and regroup. Continuing down this path to oblivion isn't going to work.
We had a moderately successful FB program, an occasionally exciting men's basketball program, and former conference championship level baseball and volleyball. Beyond that I really don't know what successful athletic teams we've had besides Track & Field. Sometimes I think we ought to just shut it all off and have the best T&F team in the South.
That'll really draw the alums back to campus.

Regarding "we had a moderately successful football program" - we had 1 really good season that was followed up with another good season (but not a playoff appearance because that was before expansion). Moderately successful means you have more winning than losing seasons, make the occasional playoff appearance, etc.
Bob Waters did a tremendous job while at the helm, but as good as he was we never won a conference championship and had 5 losing seasons under him in SoCon play. I would say his stint was moderately successful if compared to other schools (very successful compared to our history), but I wouldn't go there with anything outside of particularly 1977-1984. To put our football history in perspective, Coach Waters only had 2 seasons winning 7 or more games at the 1-AA/FCS level (11 in 83, 8 in 84, but several years of 6 wins) and Speir has 3 of those seasons (but still no playoff appearances). In no way am I saying our current staff is 1/2 of what Waters did in Cullowhee, but I am just saying outside of like 2 years we have really been mediocre to down-right awful in football. Since Coach Waters, we have had 9 winning seasons and 21 losing ones.
I certainly don't agree with the coaching extension last year. At the same time, it is going to take catching lightning in a bottle (what will probably translate to a young coach who leaves after a couple of successful seasons) for our football program to turn around.

Coach Waters did a hell of a job
I played under him 82 thru 85
Damn good coach
We had nothing as far as cat club..NOTHING
WE did catathons to get money during summer
I recall gathering up a little over 500 dollars myself one year from family and friends
We finished 1983 6 0 1 in southern conference
Furman 7 0 1
Bull "Censored Word" we did not get co champions that year but STUPID so conf rule
But Bob Waters was outstanding
We got 3 dollars or so for post game meal on road
Our weight room was so small we worked out by position groups
WE HAD NO SUPPORT ON MOST SATURDAYS UNTIL 83 AND 84
THAT GAME WE CAME BACK AND BEAT ETSU ON THE IMMACULATE RASHEED RECEPTION THE STADIUM WAS EMPTY
EVERYONE GAVE UP AND LEFT
THE FIRST PLAYOFF GAME WE ONLY HAD FAMILY IN THE STANDS IT WAS A JOKE NO SUPPORT
STOP DISCREDITING BOB WATERS

Well it was Thanksgiving. Some students did come back because Cotton had to give permission to open dorms back up.

I was not trying to discredit Coach Waters - he is far and away the best football coach WCU ever had. What I was trying to say is that even with a coach like that, we still only had a few really good years and his roughly 8-10 year stretch was the only time at the D1 level we enjoyed any kind of even moderate success. In the 30 years since he was gone we have 9 winning seasons (and it will be 22 losing ones).
It will take pure luck to get somebody like him in Cullowhee again. The difference this time is if we ever get another one they will leave after a couple of good years and Coach Waters was in it for the long haul. The primary point is a great coach will even struggle at WCU. And we haven’t had a truly great coach since him
