I will try and repost it sometime tomorrow... I created a word doc showing every year... Right now I have to lay down as an xray today showed I have pneumonia... Never had it before and right now it is kicking my tail! Bob Waters coached for 20 years & part of that time he was also Western’s AD & Head Football Coach. His record at WCU during that time period was 116 wins 94 losses & 6 ties. He took the Cats to the D2 National Championship against Terry Bradshaw & Louisiana Tech. He took the Cats to the Division 1AA National Championship Game against Southern Illinois in 1983. His 1983 Team was undefeated in SoCon play but did not win the SoCon Championship but beat the team (Furman) that won the SoCon Championship. Western beat Furman at Furman in the NCAA playoffs. VMI did not play WCU in 1983 but did play Furman. Furman won the Championship because of that fact. No Football Coach in Western Carolina History has ever taken a Western Carolina Team to a National Championship Game other than Bob Waters. He has the most wins in WCU Football History & Coached WCU for more years than any Coach in the history of WCU Football. He also had a good record against App State until he got real sick. He was the primary person behind WCU’s move from NAIA to the Southern Conference in 1977. People talk about our Football Program so poorly funded now. The Funding for Football Program during Coach Waters time in Cullowhee was on life support. I remember when he had to get the Baseball Coach to give him Baseball Scholarships to use for signing Football Players. He used the shotgun & spread type offense before it became popular 15 or so years ago. He left us way to soon & he was only 50 years old. With his death in 1988, the Football Program has been one losing season after another except for a few seasons since his death.

And the blame then, as it does to this day, lays squarly on the WCU Admin at the top for not taking advantage of the success under Waters. So, here we are today in the same mess blaming coaching staff after coaching staff for the ineptitude of WCU football. The underlying pattern here is not coaching it is total lack of support from the folks at the top for a winning football and athletic program.

I still get sad remembering the last couple of years of his life... From what I have always heard he was not only a geat coach but also a stand up man!

We were right there with everyone in the conference after the time period of 1983-1985 but WCU Admin. did not step up... Wasn't long after that we started getting left behind in commitment.

I agree that money is an issue. But we have not done a good job of using the money we have. Our recruiting sucks. We seem happy just to sign 20-25 guys each year. The fact that some are 2nd team all-county from some out of the way county does not seem to matter. Do not believe all the hype you read when we sign a kid. Of course the best will be done to make the young fellow look like a star. But check out what other schools are after him. That speaks volumes. I can state as a hard fact from many years of HS coaching that our environment of losing and our location so deep in the mountains is a MAJOR factor. Mid-level recruits do not even consider us. Not many kids want to be a part of "rebuilding" a program such as ours. I hate to say it but we are going to have to take some other route. We need to hit the JC's hard. Take some transfers. We need a shot of energy. We do not have the time to try and fix this dumpster fire with HS recruits and coaches that have little or no experience.

To Recent Grad If you continue in this line of insults, not only will you be censored, you will be banned (your IP address). I will also return the board to members only posting. If you want to screw everybody, just continue with your insults. Most folks on this board know who Jim is, so he states his opinions out in public, but I see you like to do your insulting behind a screen name, as a "guest". People on this board can express their opinions, good or bad about the quality of the coaching staff. They shouldn't have to worry about being insulted for their opinions. You've also provided little of, in your own term "FACTS" to back up what you say, so let's quit with the bolster. -Jerry Jerry, First, I apologize. Not using boards very often, not clear on rules. The only comment I will make is that apparently, "civility" is in the eye of the beholder. We can chastise coaches as we wish, but not each other. Just seems strange to an outsider. I will simply walk away as I personally cannot condone being a part of a system where one person can comment on someone's ability, yet that person cannot be called out on their expertise or reasoning.

Skip, Football was his entire life except for his family. When the Chancellor removed him from the HC Job, Coach Waters died within a few months. I can still see him in my mind sitting in his wheelchair, with a microphone near his mouth and his lifeless body trying to still coach. I do not know if you were aware that Coach Waters was one of several players on the San Francisco Forty Niners that came down with the same disease that killed him. Just remember he went undefeated in the SoCon & beat Furman that did win the SoCon in 1983.

Well, it's like this, the Catamount Sports Forum is a fan message board, it's here for the WCU fans, not the WCU coaches. If someone has a criticism of any coaches performance, it's fair game. All coaches know it's part of their job, if you win, the criticism is less, if you lose there is more. While all "points of view"are welcome here, calling out other WCU fans because of their opinion is not. I will not allow anyone to defame anyone here, especially coaches, however, their job performance is certainly open to debate. We do have posted rules, so please read the board's Terms of Service - catamount.boards.net/thread/7914/catamount-sports-forum-terms-service. Your input is certainly welcome, we welcome you to become a member of the board, and let everyone know your opinions. If someone attacks you because of your opinions, I'll take the same actions. You can differ with someone else's opinion, without attacking them personally.

That meant that WCU was only giving about 47 total scholarships. I don’t believe that for a minute. He also mentioned the recruiting budget. I think the recruiting budget is around 90,000 or so dollars. I think just about everybody on here has come to the conclusion that WCU’s Administration is a joke when it comes to funding the Football Program. Civility on this board means that everybody has a right to freely express their opinions & to respect those opinions that you disagree with them. I have posted on this board for several years & I have come to the conclusion that a number of people have a hard time separating Coach Speir’s personality from his performance. I think one of the best posts on this Board was made by Hampton a few days ago. He stated he started watching the Coaching more during the games & he realized that we have some Coaching issues. Keep in mind that he was a good supporter of Coach Speir & his Staff. I also think he mentioned that Coach Speir should not be a HC. I to want to apologize to you for saying some things in conversations I made with you last year. I should have never said them. You have been nothing but fair to me & all Board Members from day one. You have kept us straight, encouraged us to post opinions, and defended us when we have been unjustly attacked by others. I do think maybe you need to go to a Members Only Board. I think the comments on this Board is justified but I also think the comments can impact future recruits. Shielding these comments makes a lot of sense to me. I sure would hate to think our comments would hurt the recruiting process.
