Two comments. First, Coach Wagner had many more problems than just retaining unproductive assistant coaches. It was obvious from day 1 that he was a poor head coach for too many reasons to mention. Second, us folks are not the reason that WCU has been in the SoCon football cellar for most of the last 40 years. The reason we have been in the cellar is lack of university support for Athletics in general. Every athletic program except for maybe baseball and track and field have been in the SoCon cellar for the past 40 years so that does not point to poor coaching. That points to poor funding of all athletic programs across the board. Firing Speir is not the answer but you have already decided that is the only thing that will work and you will not listen to any other points of view on the subject. The answer is to give Coach Speir the funding and scholarship money and for the university to get behind athletics and fund athletics at a D1 level and not a D2 level which we have for 40 years. You are wrong on both counts. 1) Wagner could have had competitive teams IF he had made appropriate and timely adjustments to his staff 2) The fan base has never demanded excellence in their coaching staff. We have always waited for next year, hoping for the best. With only low expectations from the fan base, every AD and football head coach have been free to field mediocre teams without any blowback from the fan base. If excellence isn't demanded, usually it's not provided. What amazes me with this that the older alumni have the mindset that the fan base doesn't demand excellence. People don't attend games when they are not happy with the results, people don't stay after the band performs to watch the end of the game. This is obvious for all of our sports and the coaches, players, and AD can see this. With that being mentioned who actually believes firing the coach is going to make a difference? As if that has worked before... Give coaches 4 years, throw an extension, and then fire the coach half way through it. Rinse and repeat. We have done that with every coach since the 90s. At this point it is probably more beneficial for our school to keep a guy who is interested in the job and staying in the area long term. If you cannot stomach the results, cheer for a different team or stop supporting them all together. We have had 1 playoff appearance ever, and the majority of students and alumni weren't even alive at that point. I know people will argue that WCU should just drop a division or quit football, but currently Football and Basketball helps fund the rest of the sports with their money games. Alabama isn't going to sign a Div 3 team.

I inserted the word "quality" in place of that, I hope that helps clear up the confusion for you guys.

If excellence isn't demanded, usually it's not provided. You cannot believe that Wagner was a good head coach and that he had a bad staff and if he had a better staff he would have won. If you believe that I have a workshop to sell you at the North Pole. Wagner could not recruit and he was an a-hole. Everybody knew that. Where were you? As far as demanding excellence in coaching, I will say it again. If we hired Nick Saban or Dabo Sweeney they could not win at Western because the administrations past and present have not funded football at the appropriate level. You think Western is like Ohio State or Michigan where we have unlimited funds and we are not that. Coaching and recruiting and being able to retain a coaching staff is all about money. Look at what App has done. That is because they have fully funded football. Satterfield would not have won at Western either. If we do not renew Speir's contract at the end of this next year, I want you to remember that in 5 years when you are calling for the next guy to be fired.

I love your ability to read someone's post and take from it whatever you want it to say. You totally mispresented what I said. I'm done with you. But I will say this, if after 5 years and the next guy can't win any more games than the last two head coaches, hell yeah, I'll be calling for him to be fired, as should everyone.
