I might have been wrong, but I thought I heard Coach Bell say that Samuel Cornett was hurt during some of camp and fell behind.
Coach Bell and Coach Kade Bell seem to know what they are doing, so I am sticking with how they are COACHING THE team over some of US ARMCHAIR Coaches:
GO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Bell just said a few minutes ago that Sam Cornett was having a great preseason camp and then got a mild concussion a couple weeks ago and he missed 6-7 days of work....They are trying to catch him up according to the coach....

That was what I was alluding to in saying I hope we can redshirt him - he can play in up to 4 games (so 3 more). But as I also said, you have to be careful with how the transfer portal works now. Guys will bolt pretty fast thinking the "grass is greener" somewhere else. I don't envy coaches - especially at the FCS level - who have to try and manage the playing time and try to keep guys happy. That is really hard when we have such a deep QB room right now. 95, you are 100% correct. How many players that were redshirted in the prior coaching staff remained on the team once the season was over? Standing on the sideline & not playing does not improve your skills as a QB. When next year rolls around, are you going to play a QB that has game experience or are you going to play a QB that stood on the sideline & watched the other QBs getting game time experience. My understanding the reason for Cornett not playing is he received a concussion in practice. If what the Coach is saying about Cornett having a concussion, why did he put him in the game for a few plays in the 4th quarter. Something does not sound right to me.

I really would not read into this a much as what you say above. The concussion was the cause for missing all the days of practice, the missing all the days of practice was the cause of Cornett being behind the other QB's in the grasp of the schemes, Cornett was given some play time at the end of the game, well, because the coaches could do so. Cornett was healthy, WCU was in a comfortable lead, and the coaches played him. I've been given NO reason to believe from this staff so far that they don't know what they are doing or are into playing the favoritism game at the expense of NOT doing what is best for the team and winning games. UNLESS, all above is just a made up story by the coach, he's full of crap, telling the fans and Daniel Hooker a story to "squash the questions surrounding Cornett". If so, then we have a much bigger issue than a QB controversy (if you can call it that). We have an integrity of coaching issue. Just don't see it here. But hey, we can keep on whipping this dead horse if it gives us all something to talk about.
RE: Redshirting. Yep, new reality. WCU will lose players again this year to the portal. WCU, will again, gain players via the portal. Just like every other college team in the U.S. The "free market" principle has finally been applied to college football, love it or hate it all you want, but I doubt it will change back to how it was before.

I agree with you. Obviously Cornett got hurt after having a good start. Coaches are human and they make the best decision for the team based on their judgement. I also agree that there is nothing nefarious going on and the coaches we have are honest and very knowledgeable. If Cornett catches up and out performs the other QBs in practice, he will move up on the depth chart. I am saying that we will not retain all of these Freshmen QBs after this year. They all came to Western to be the starting QB and none of them want to sit behind someone for 4 years and be the backup as their eligibility is used up. Especially now with the ability to immediately transfer and play. As you say, the portal is here to stay. With all that said, since coaches are human all decisions on who plays and how much comes down to subjective judgement based on the coaches experience and bias. I just hope they always pick correctly for the teams sake.
